The Effects of Technology Technological and scientific breakthrough has taken the world beyond our highest expectations providing us with countless benefits. Tremendous changes have been visible in every sphere of human life, especially for the past half century. Technology and science is the growth engine of world economy regardless of what it is being used for. Technology has brought forth a wide scope of accessibility to information which has dual facets as good and bad. In this paper I mean to point out the numerous advantages derived from the technology. It also covers some of the upsetting features of the same; yet tends to value the concept that technology is a boon to our modern life. Positive effects Industrialization was the initial effect of the enormous application of technology in various fields. Sophisticated machinery and highly useful equipments were implemented at every type work which resulted in high level production and profit. Application of technology reduced labor cost as well as human effort in every work and almost every manufacturing activity was industrialized putting an end to the era of hand made products. Though unemployment was an inevitable consequent, in the long run technological application was a proven advantage to mankind. High quality products, easy accessibility, low price, convenient use, and variety of choice were some of the common benefits of technological application in industrial and busines field. Similar was the case with other service areas such as health care, travel and communication, agriculture, food processing, and many more. As the manufacturing sector was strengthened, it paved way for new business opportunities and employment. Governments and individuals could make good profit from new products and technology based services. (Kim L. & Nelson R., 2000 pp.105-107). Inventions like television, satellites, computers, internet, and mobile phone are the highly significant inventions that made remarkable changes in human life over the past few decades. The modern transportation facilities enable us to travel anywhere in the world and it has promoted international tourism more than ever before. Technology and healthcare Healthcare is another area that has been highly benefited by modern technology. The use of X-ray, CT scan and MRI helps diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. The modern equipments have also helped in the research and development of new medicines and treatment. Transplantation of internal organs and effective treatment for almost all diseases are possible due to the advancement of technology. WHO has introduced a network which provides vital information about diseases and treatment. (Hough P., 2004 p.73) Information technology Information technology and communication has been highly benefited by the modern technology. It helps people to stay connected with others at any time. Technology like internet and mobile phone has become the fastest method of collecting and transferring information. It provides immense help for international business groups and organizations. They can easily monitor each and every function of their team even from far distance or foreign countries. Internet is the most wonderful achievement of modern technology. If offers numerous communication services across the world like emails and chat services through various websites and search engines. It offers a wide range of service to people of all ages and interests including international news in detail, films, sports and many other entertainment choices. “Information technology revolution has resulted in the creation of wealth, a reduction in inflation, and high quality employment for many.”(Roco & Bainbridge,2006 p.60 ) Technological advancement has extremely contributed the field of education also. Computer and internet facilities have been widely used in modern schools and colleges. Students can learn online and acquire knowledge on various subjects of their own choice and interests. Internet facility has made education a rewarding challenge and entertainment. they have the convenience of online libraries and can create their own web pages at home.(Braun W.,2003 p.6) Today students are able to get online assistance from tutors and have access to numerous websites which offer knowledge in abundance. youngsters can be engaged in activities that structure an experience for collaborate learners. It avoids the troubles of traditional classrooms where teachers are hard-pressed to manage students’ attention, movement, time and performance. (Gura & Percy, 2005,p.161) Furthermore now education has become an endless process where people pursue their learning till the end of their life. There are many who enjoy both learning subjects, and doing online jobs even after their retirement. The information technology has opened a new arena of employment opportunities across the world. People today experience comparatively better standard of living which is highly attributed to modern technology. On the other hand a refuting idea suggests that technology has taken the world to the verge of extinction. According to this belief technology is responsible for many of the existing global problems. The proponents of this view find an array of reasons to suspect the technological advancement and new experiments. Internet: impact on children and adults As everything has pros and corns, internet also can be misused for immoral activities. Many youngsters are obviously scandalized by obscene videos and offensive messages. False ideas are being conveyed to their immature minds. Students get distracted from their studies and fall in bad companies. Moreover they try to imitate the lifestyle they see over the net and other media that presumably lead them to wrong decision. Children tend to rely exceedingly on mobile phone and computer at an alarming rate which would adversely affect their physical as well as mental health. Children who spend more time indoors playing computer games and youngsters who stay desk bound are vulnerable to illness. Tecnology: impact on health According to Maurer A. & Smith, (2004, p.184) some current trends in communicable diseases can be attributed to modernization and technology because industrialization and crowding of large number of people in to the relatively small space of a city possibily increase certain diseases. The hectic schedule of modern life and over reliance on technology has plunged the world in to unhealthy lifestyle. People tend to rely on fast food and restaurant food. Preparing food at home has become an old practice. The traditional home made food could ensure fine food environment to children. Apparently fast food is more delicious, easily available and convenient to people. Moreover many parents often fall under the influence of infant food companies’ advertisements which has accelerated the trend of junk food consumption. Technology and terrorism In the opinion of. Shelley (2002) today terrorism and transnational crime are the two central threats to our national and international security. He describes the linkage of the two as follows; both use the similar mean to exploit the modern technology; use the same operators and same systems to move their fund; both are running a good network; and terrorists also involve in crime in order to meet fund for their activities. They have developed there own highly equipped teams with modern weapons and operating systems. The criminals have also created national and international tie up with terrorist organizations and other rebellious groups by taking advantage from the same technology. In fact technology can not be blamed for these problems, instead the consequence depends on how we make use the particular technology. Parents have the responsibility to observe the activities of children. Using internet and watching TV should be restricted. They should be encouraged for the regular physical activities. People must give priority to home made food. The world has to change the prevailing concept about health and food and inculcate a new attitude towards life. Inorder to fight terrorism and organized crime technology could be used by designing proper systems to observe and prevent illegal immigrants and intruders in every country. The financial source of every organization and its fiscal policies and transactions can be verified. With the help of information technology governments can implement an effective method to scrutinize the flow of charitable funds and donations to the organizations To sum up, the world is being driven by technology at a rapid level change beyond the control of any one. Possibilities of technology are unpredictable and also uncertain what it will be used for in the future. The so called destructive and offensive aspects are the result of human activities. The tendency to commit mistake is the part of human nature. The only difference is that today he deals with advanced technology whereas in the past his method was rather undeveloped. Technology is not bad in itself but it can be misused for distructive purposes. The growth of technology can not be prevented and, what we can do is adapt to constantly keep pace with it.
