Deviance is a result of something going wrong. Merton undertook a sociological stage of the study, where the origins of deviance are followed to the nature of the social formation. Refusing attempts to personalize the reasons of deviance, he argued that deviance in certain groups combined of typical biological dispositions because they are reacting generally to the social condition in which they encounter. Merton regarded this social condition as a result of a disconnection between culture and social formation.

People interact with desiring certain cultural targets: head among these is the target of financial achievement. The social formation also gives different lawful ways to achieve financial success. Nevertheless, chances are closed for people because of their social rank when there is a deficiency of adaptation between the targets and ways, although the point is that each one with ability can win, so problems of strain arise later. There is a conflict between the cultural focus on the financial goal and the social barriers to full prospects.

Merton describes this type of society where there is a lack of equality of opportunity joined with a robust focus on financial success as “anomic”. Deviant conduct is comprehended as arising from responses to conditions of “anomie”. According to Merton deviance is not basically a product of a lack of chances for certain people. As he observed that many societies had little chances for social progress, and there was a huge space between rich and poor, but few deviant behaviors aroused.

The important cause is that socialization procedure focuses on the accomplishment of financial success. A separation between these cultural targets and the chances or legal ways within the social formation for achieving it makes “strains” in which people will acclimatize to in various means. On the basis of this reasoning, he recommended the “ideal type” a set of types of acclimatization.
