The play brings to light three actual murders by the time it concludes. In the first murder, Othello kills his wife Desdemona. Othello believes that Desdemona cheated on him with another man, Cassio, thus plans and stabs his wife to death. In a fit of madness fueled by rage and jealousy, Othello kills his wife in private, as he cannot stand the thought that Desdemona cheated on him. It is later revealed that his wife had all along been faithful and it was Iago who plays on the jealous emotions of Othello so that he may lose face in the eyes of the people and eventually lose his position as their leader.

The second victim of a murder in Othello is Emilia, Desdemona’s lady in waiting. Her husband, Iago, kills her because she was about to reveal the plans set in motion by him. Emilia was to reveal in public that it was Iago, and not Cassio, who had Desdemona’s handkerchief hence dispelling the rumor that her lady had cheated on Othello. Iago kills his own wife in private and goes on as if nothing has happened.

The third person to be murdered in the play is Roderigo. He is Iago’s second victim as the former murders him so that his plans do not fall apart. This is despite the fact that the two were considered to be close friends at the moment of the murder.

Is not actually physically murdered in the play. The old man literarily dies of a broken heart attributed to the fact that his daughter ran away with Othello hence is eventually “murdered” by his daughter and her lover.

He is not killed as he commits suicide out of guilt from killing his wife. He dies as a result of Iago’s betrayal hence can be qualified as a murder by Iago.
