Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Tests on the Mean: Confidence Interval for Population Mean; Standard Deviation Known:The confidence interval for population mean is a representation of the range of values within which we expect the mean of the actual population to lie, having obtained the sample mean from the sample evaluated in the research, with a specified allowance for error. The probability of covering a true parameter value is thus established (Gilliland & Melfi p.2).(Nahid & Leila) apply confidence intervals in the study “Comparison of Intelligence Quotient in Children surviving leukemia who Received Different Prophylactic Central Nervous System Treatments” to ascertain whether there is significant difference in IQ with respect to sex (p.2). In the study, the research establishes that there is no significant difference in the means for leukemia survivors of different gender.

Hypothesis Tests for population Mean; Standard Deviation Unknown:Hypothesis test is the process of evaluation of the truthfulness of a statement made regarding the parameters of research data, at a certain level of confidence. (Anderson, Burnham & Thomson p.913) present a hypothesis test on the mean, and attempt to demonstrate how the test has been misused. (Pearson & Bloom p.8) have used the standard z-test to describe the poll results of senate contest in 2002. They have diagrammatically represented the expected normal distribution of the results, and emphasized on the interpretation of these results based on the drafted hypothesis.
