Hamdan AlHosani Jenna Altherr English 107 - 005 Sept. 15th Essay Boxers are very interesting people; and I have always looked forward to seeing them engage in the ring. Being one of my favorite sports, I love participating in boxing events because they provide a lot of fascination to the spectators. A boxing enthusiast will definitely have adrenaline flow in their body as their cheer and jeer their favorite player. Particularly, I have come to find the boxing events as both thrilling and educational, as well as eye-catching, considering the dynamism presented by every turn of event and personalities who usually attend the events. There is a great deal of perspectives that one can attain and learn from when attending these events. First, from the boxers, I have been able to learn new boxing skills, that together with my team mates, we have been able to put into practice for the benefit of our boxing prosperity. Second, from the fans, one can be able to learn the techniques of identifying the winning teams; thus, be able to put a formidable support and cheering team with the rest of fans. In reality, the beholding of the fans chanting names of their best boxers, and booing the opponents is usually breath-taking and eye-catching to me considering the fact that the opposition only last as long as the matches last. Finally, the organizers to these boxing events, whether at district, national or regional levels, have a preference for large venues that also take on the shape of amphitheaters as this presents all fans and those in-attendance, the exact view of the fights as they progress. The interior decorations of most stadiums are usually decorated with pictures and names of former boxing stars; thus, creating an ambient mood for boxing in itself. However, an achievement in boxing does not come quite easily since the sport requires a high degree of accuracy and timeliness in order to win. Attending a boxing event in a boxing gym located in our neighborhood introduced me to a group of dedicated fans and boxers. Boxing is a sport that requires dedication, discipline, and communication with coaches and fans given that the game bonds us together, and makes us a family. The gymnasium offers the spectacular location for the boxing event. On a particular occasion and game, especially for games that are played during the night, the venue was well decorated and lit with the bright luminous covering the entire box gym. The lighting was intended to enhance vision for both the boxers and the fans, while providing a reflection of the venue. Furthermore, a boxing arena must always be lit since, it provides a control environment so that the boxers do not get to utterly injure their opponents in the matches. Personally, as a boxer, I would not attend a boxing event that has its arena poorly lit, as in the event of rampages, though rare, one may get hurt due to the force from the crowd. In addition, the portraits on the wall said it all; they bore images of boxing veterans that shone in their times. By giving them the first glance, I could not fail to recognize the faces of legendary boxers Mike Tyson and Mohammed Ali. Coupled with the honor to the legends was the perfect organization of the gym, which made it to be distinct and classy. To newcomers, the gym provided a serene environment for them to enjoy the game as they appreciated the work of art. From the outlook of the features within the gym and the people that attend, one can easily tell that boxing is not a game for any other person; it is a game for the courageous, the brave, and the strong. There are diverse groups of people within the gymnasium that came for different purposes but all revolving around boxing. First there is the group that comprises of the organizes and sponsors of the games, who in most instances, were few in number, but accorded the dignity, recognition and security required. This group of persons were always in official attire and mingled only with their kind. A glance into their faces would easily reveal the mood swings that could be easily explained by the fact that they bet on the respective players with their kind. A second group were the boxers/players themselves, who in most occasions were the center stage for my being in a gymnasium. Their looks would be easily identified by the boxing wear such as gloves and shorts and in some cases, being bare chested that they adorned. Third, was the match officials, who in most occasions adorned in the same look and attire, and were responsible for the management and conducting of the games from start to conclusion. They monitored the movements of the boxers, and declared the winners. A final group was the fans, who were the largest in number representation. While there was no formal attire for the fans, the most outstanding identity for all fans was the placards and banners that bore the names of eth boxers that they supported. In essence, the majority of the people in a boxing arena are the boxing enthusiasts, like me. The fans cheer and jeer their favorite players. In a show of solidarity with their favorite players, they put on jerseys that represent them with inscriptions of their names at the back. Once the whistle is blown, it is all jubilation from the fans. I always look forward to this spectacular moment as the boxers show their prowess and tact. Apart from the fans, we have the coaches, boxers, and organizers, all playing their respective roles in the ring. In this particular boxing event, the organizers wore t-shirts that made them identifiable; they were written ‘AD Boxing Event’, where AD stands for Abu Dhabi, the capital city of UAE. The organizers take a very different approach to the event, while the fans are busy cheering their players, the organizers take little attention of the game, and theirs is to ensure that every activity runs according to script. On the other hand, the coaches are the most interesting group of people, given their role and significance in such games. Besides being very excited and always looking forward to their players winning, the coaches are usually tasked with the role of supporting and encouraging their players to stand up when hit and fight back harder. Subsequently, the coaches usually reminded their boxers of the winning strategies that would apply against their opponents in order to win. Apparently, these roles and much more present the coaches as the most restless people, more than the fans, as a win to their particular player is a win and a boost to their reputation. They can be heard shouting at the players either instructing them or congratulating them for a move well executed. When I look at the coaches, they inspire me to engage in the sport, I feel that I am not here only to have fun but to learn and begin my boxing life. I loved the great joy, the enthusiasm, and the passion for the game, as portrayed by the coaches. I felt awakened from my deep desire for the game to throwing myself in the ring and engaging in the real fight. There is a sense of liveliness that is created in the gym as every individual attempts to play their designated role well. When the times come for the time-out, it is refreshing time. The coach engaged me in a heated conversation, talking straight to my face “my friend you need to anticipate his throws, especially with his uppercut blows. He seems to be taking advantage of you.” In acknowledgement to his sentimentalities, I nodded and took a sip of cold water to cool the heated body. The fans awaken the spirits by mentioning my name constantly, “Go! Go! Go!” they are heard shouting. The spirits are awaited and I get back to the ring reenergized and passionate. Back to engaging the opponent, I unleashed all the skills from all arsenals in order to prove myself, reward my fans, and my coach for their unrelenting support. The experience was spectacular; I did not embarrass the fans. Most importantly, the passion for the game continued to grow in me. A deep feeling that this is my sport and I would not relent playing was strong in me. After the game, it’s all jubilation by the fans of the winning team as the rest walk out disappointed. The players greet one another as a show of unity. The winning player taking time to celebrate with the fans, greeting them accepting applauds from the crowd. In conclusion, boxing is one of the spectacular games that I have come to adore. It gives an opportunity for the players, fans, organizers and coaches a chance to take up their roles in ensuring there is achievement of objectives. Every individual prides in his or her role irrespective of the outcome. It is apparent that at the end of the game, there ought to be a winner and a loser, therefore, the players are required to be friendly after the game. I loved the location, the gym acted as the perfect location for the game, the decorations, and the setting made it ideal. The people make the game what it is; nobody can be ignored, as they all play very significant roles. Boxing is more than a game; it provides an opportunity for integration, participation, and engagement. I look forward to growing my passion in the game. I might have stopped considering boxing as a career, but it will always be the game that will live in my heart. I still box in a boxing club in Tucson, where I could still release all the hatred and thinking from my mind and heart.
