Human Service 4 and 5 al Affiliation Assignment Conflict-Handling A Brief Based On Your Individual Assessment Of Conflict Handling I have learnt to accept conflict as natural and one that happens daily as I interact with others, and I perceive it as an opportunity to change, grow, improve my communication, or understand others (Mandell & Schram, 2012). This way, I seek conflict resolution by ensuring that the affected individuals are present and that I calm them down as much as possible. I am also good at listening to the affected person with hope of clarity and understanding of the situation, hence giving appropriate solution. Explanation Of How Conflict-Handling Skills Might Assist Or Hinder Performance In Current Or Potential Leadership Roles Conflict-handling skills might assist performance in leadership roles since a leader understands that they do not have to react. This way, one avoids sinking to the same level as those in conflict by exercising patience, strength, and detachment from ego. In addition, a leader manages to respond to conflict situations from a sadness position other than anger. With anger, one only scares followers making them defensive. This then negatively affects any relationships. How Conflict Resolution Might Impact My Collaboration Skills Collaboration requires a neutral facilitator such that during high emotions, solutions are obtained by a party that has no vested interests. In addition, collaboration requires setting ground rules such that participants can only disagree on ideas and not with people (Mandell & Schram, 2012). Besides, I believe that before anything else, those in conflict must seek to resolve the conflict themselves, such that it can be possible to brainstorm solutions as a group. Response To A Colleague Through Suggesting Strategies For Addressing Leadership And Collaboration Challenges In order to address leadership and collaboration challenges, the best way is to avoid triangulation. Triangulation is when one avoids speaking to the person they are in conflict with but speaks to other people, thus involving a third party which is counterproductive. Assignment #2: Values and Attitudes. What I Bring to the Helping Relationship Attitudes And Values That I Believe Are Most Important For Effective Human Services Professionals And An Explanation Why I Think They Are Important As a human services’ professional, one has to seek understanding during any conflict. Understanding goes a long way in ensuring that one does not jump right into conflict handling without assessing the situation or determining the next steps until the problem is solved. This way, it is possible for the client to feel relieved from their responsibility to obtain a solution as the professional is responsible for obtaining alternatives from which the client can identify what they want to be done first (Mandell & Schram, 2012). Secondly, one has to be a great listener through collaborative listening that facilitates clarity as the client expresses their thoughts, goals or feelings. This makes the employee feel heard. Through such collaboration, one manages to assist the client to understand his or her interests, feel acknowledged, and define words and concepts that express what they value. Thirdly, it is good to recognize power. In any helping relationship, power is very dominant and any assumptions can result in wrong turn of events. Through helping relationships, one has to recognize the dynamics of power and often mind how to authentically resolve them. Finally, a human service professional has to be resilient and optimistic (Mandell & Schram, 2012). By agreeing to get into helping relationships, one demonstrates courage while it is an indication that the client trusts one’s supportive and responsible efforts. Consequently, this makes every effort to inspire clients to be optimistic, work towards their hopes, and ensure that all relationships are successful and not prematurely terminated. The Attitudes And Values I Possess And The Ones To Develop Or Enhance And An Explanation How You Might Develop And Apply Them To Your Own Role As Human Services Professional As a human service professional, my roles include interviewing, communication, teaching, and critical thinking among others. Effective involvement into my roles require accountability, respect for others, empathy, and pragmatism. I always seek accountability in my work in that I take responsibility to uphold a given level of performance depending on a set of expectations outlined by my agency. Accountability is crucial in helping relations as it facilitates follow-ups on patients, and critical assessment of the professional by stakeholders. Within my roles, treating others with dignity and respect is inevitable since it is a critical ingredient in developing and sustaining strong relationships that include and value the participating parties. Personally, I uphold that treating my clients and colleagues with respect is a fundamental value that costs nothing. Through adherence to dignity and respect for others, I have managed to utilize the opportunity to build unanimity and nurture multicultural awareness. Strong helping relationships mean that as a human service professional I adhere to confidentiality of personal information, thus building trust that encourages sharing both private information useful in identifying solutions. Although I value accountability, I have to improve and balance effectiveness, quality, and efficiency which are crucial dimensions of accountability. I have to ensure that despite pressure and high workloads, my efficiency does not have to be valued by the amount of service provided, but by effectiveness and quality. Effectiveness adds to the quantity of the provided services through incorporating the results, or impacts of the service. Assignment #3: Values and Culture A brief description of the dilemmas portrayed in the media presentation, including the individuals involved in the case Upon his arrival home, John doesn’t know the best way to deal with his cheating wife and beats her up and is arrested. After his charges, John wants to go home not sure what he would do to his wife upon seeing her. He is frustrated for being in jail yet no one has heard his side of the story. Identify the values and cultural influences that are presented in the case John loves his family and has always respected the dignity of his wife. Barbara demonstrates respect, empathy, confidentiality, and optimism. In the end, she encourages John that they will pull through the situation together. She is also accountable and explains to John every aspect of their relationship. Explain how these values and cultural influences might be impacting the dilemmas portrayed Through his respect for his wife, John feels frustrated and his violence towards his wife could be worse since he is also angry. However, with much assurance from Barbara, calming John down will work well in ensuring that he does not commit more offense by beating his wife. Explain how you, as the human service professional, would support the clients in the case study I would support John by acknowledging that he is a target of blame and a victim of a sensitive conflict situation that requires listening and must optimism. I would also seek for any personality patterns while assisting him so as to analyze his past and predict his future. For instance, John has never been violent to his wife and his anger must be managed. Additional insights or alternative perspectives Besides managing the situation through optimism and understanding, I would recommend identifying patterns of blame. John acted out of anger and frustration, and was arrested for being a target of blame by his wife’s lover. In this case, the lover only generated false information that the police accepted as true and gave John an urgent legal action. John needs persuasion to avoid escalating the conflict. Assignment #4: Final Project and Culture Identify the particular program or area of practice that you selected for the Final Project My focus area is in assisting persons caught up in substance use disorders resulting in addiction. Through case management, addicts to drug, and other substances can be assisted and guided on how to take responsibility of their own recovery. As a human service professional, I can play a crucial role in ensuring that the client obtains relevant education and training, as well as adopting the right attitude to ensure that there is a healthy and productive helping relationship during the case management period. This is possible since professionals should not only focus on treatment, but look beyond to seek understanding of the needs of the person over their lifetime. Such attention is critical in follow-ups and preventing any retreats into old addiction habits. The professional must assist individual in ensuring that they become willing to use their strong points to sustain recovery. While working with the friends or family of the addict, the human services professional should seek to ensure that the society supports them and does not deny them any assistance or inspiration because of their situation as this will facilitate harm reduction. The need for human services intervention is because addiction has traditionally remained a lack of individual self-control or a form of moral failure. However, today the treatment approach is different and it is perceived as a chronic brain disease since it is driven by neurochemical changes in the brain besides exposure to aspects such as genetic, behavioral, and environmental attribute. Some of the substances affecting the nervous system include nicotine, alcohol, and opioids. When presented to the brain, such substances increases dopamine in the brain and created the strong link to drug use. For effective addiction interventions, human services providers must possess an attitude ready to fight any negative emotions and uncomfortable impacts that may arise from dealing with persons struggling with addiction. In addition, it is human services professionals must ensure that addicts are not depicted as criminals, lazy, weak, or morally corrupt people, and that the society does not stigmatize them (Bartlett, Brown, Shattell, Wright, & Lewallen, 2013). The attitude towards people’s addiction by human services professionals must try as much as possible to get out of the tradition that is negatively used to represent injection drug users as this negatively affects the care received by patients. Explain how culture and the article you selected are relevant to the program or area of practice that you identified ` In order to effectively engage in productive helping relationships, human services professionals are expected to work over and above negative cultural practices (Bartlett, Brown, Shattell, Wright, & Lewallen, 2013). Culture affects the provision of services in two ways. First, the culture amongst human services professionals towards clients, and secondly, culture of the society towards the addicts. In both cases, negative culture encourages promotion of harm among addicts. Consequently, human services professionals must seek to encourage motivational interviewing such that substance abusers are not just encouraged to follow a given path for their lives, but that they are convinced to follow evaluate the outcomes of present behavior and possible changes in behavior.
