Pearson Correlation Brief of the study This study used the data file d “911 and depression” The dataset is a part of the study conducted after 9/11 event on a number of variables related to post-traumatic stress disorder. A total of 6 surveys were conducted on a total of 231 participants. These surveys were on demographic information, Post-traumatic growth inventory (PTGI), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Terror (PCL-T)- Part 1 and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Terror (PRG). The last five surveys had 21, 50, 20, 9, and 12 items respectively. The data file has a total of 137 variables including demographic questionnaire variables and participants responses to each of the items across the six surveys. Research question(s) and hypotheses The primary purpose of this study was to analyze data collected from researchers estimating the relationship between SRGS and PCLT among victims of the 911 event. The researchers tested null hypothesis that there is NO statistically significant relationship between the stress-related growth scale (SRGS) and the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Terror (PCL-T) –. against an alternative hypothesis of there is a statistically significant relationship between the stress-related growth scale (SRGS) and the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Terror (PCL-T) –part 1. The following is the primary research question: Is there a statistically significant relationship between the stress related growth scale on (SRGS) and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Terror (PCL-T) –part 1? Variables The variables for this study were PCLT and SRGS. Both were categorical variables with PCLT having scales from 1 to 5. For PCLT, 1 negated the fact that the participants experienced terror and 5 confirmed that the participants experienced terror very frequently. SRGS also had a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 indicating that the participants have small degree of growth scales and 5 indicating a very great degree of growth scale. For the purpose of this report, descriptive statistics of both scores found out that both were measured on 230 individuals. SRGS had higher scores (M= 120.92, SD=50.14) while PCLT had the least scores (M=12.88, SD=4.35), see Table 1 below. This sample size meets the minimum sample size n>85 for Pearson correlation at 0.05 level of significance (Andrew, Pedersen, & McEvoy, 2011). Table 1 Descriptive statistics Data analysis methods Pearson correlation was adopted as the main analysis method in this study. The test was to check if there exists a statistically significant relationship between stress-related growth scale (SRGS) and the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Terror (PCL-T) –. This statistical test is appropriate when there is no distinction between dependent and independent variables. Pearson correlation measures direction of relationship, either positive or negative, form or relationship could be linear or non-linear relationship, or no relationship at all, and finally degree of relationship where o shows no relationship, +1 shows perfect positive relationship and -1 shows perfect negative relationship. From the Figure 1 below, it is evident that SRGS and PCLT relate in a positive direction. Figure 1 Measure of direction of relationship. Results Pearson correlation on SRGS and PCLT was conducted. Figure 1 above shows that the pattern is generally linear meaning SRGS and PCLT have a general linear relationship. The two variables proved to have a positive correlation (r=0.437) with a p85 for Pearson correlation at 0.05 level of significance (Andrew, Pedersen, & McEvoy, 2011).Figure 1 above shows that the pattern is generally linear meaning SRGS and PTGI have a general linear relationship. Test of normality on PTGI showed that PTGI was normally distributed.
