There is no means through which burden that humans impose upon nature can be measured. It entirely relies on the manner in which man lives. However, if one looks at the rate at which important and nonrenewable resources (such as water and soil) are depleting, it is very clear that the society in the United States is quickly devouring its natural capital. It is depleting and exhausting its source of abundance. This situation can be changed by transforming the American social habits, as it exists today.

However, the current environmental crisis is an expression of the disbalance between the territory resources and the human population (the sheer number and the human way of life). Even before the coming of the white man, American Indians were sometimes destructive to the environment (Cooper 1). However, it is important to note that there were very few such that nature could endure their destruction. In the United States, this relationship has changed completely just like the overpopulated nations in Western Europe.

Regardless of the side one takes, the problem is not whether there exist limits that make the nation incapable of absorbing immigration. The problem should be where these limits lie and how they are supposed to be enforced and determined.  This can be done through rational decisions at the end or through ultimate attainment of some balance of despair between this nation and a large number of poor people elsewhere that now confronts the present situation (Cooper 1). America can take in more immigrants than it does now without having any evident social or economic effects.

This can only be achieved if it found better ways of incorporating the newcomers (the immigrants) (The Economist 1). As stated by the previous author, the big question should be how the limits must be determined and enforced, and where they lie. The issue can be solved through rational decisions and by obtaining some balance of despair between the huge number of poor people and the nations.
