Child Abuse Part Choice of a career can be affected by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Parenting and early education are the main intrinsic factors that have a huge affect on the choice of career. Culture and family help a child to rationalize the reality (Christen, 2010). Family members help us shaping and interpreting that reality (Christen, 2010). Nadine Burke, medical director of poverty clinic in San Francisco, like negative experiences of child abuses, trauma, extreme poverty and death overall have a huge affect on choice of career for adults (Bardot, 2011). In the same way my childhood experiences have been very influential in choice of my career. I was brought up by a single mother and maternal grandparents. I was fortunate enough to get good education and upbringing but not all such children live the same way. They are usually the ignored class of society who get neglected so far as education and upbringing is concerned. Also, such women become a sign of embarrassment and they are also devoid of their social and human rights even. Seeing all this, I explored a passion in myself to help such needy children and women. Such families are mostly dependant on social agencies or individuals for financial help. Due to this reason I wanted to teach in a public school where such needy kids come and get education. My social goal was to provide education and training opportunities so that availability of such necessities can be enhanced. My past experiences and obtained education molded me to follow a social career in which I could support such cases like child abuse. The bold children who have the courage to come forward and report the cases that they have been abused need lot of support from the society. There is a psychological fear in their mind that they are not safe, I want to create environment which supports them psychologically and makes them comfortable that they are safe now. As a graduate student at Barry University I can say that I have all those performance standards in my personality which make me suitable for this career. Some of the essential requirements of this job are that I need to have a passion and emotional involvement in this field as well as task management competencies so that I can effectively maintain my career. I am comfortable in a collaborative and participative environment where I can maintain cooperative environment with colleagues. I should be aware of the ethical and legal requirements for such cases and a proper know how of such cases because without knowledge I will not be able to deal with those cases. I also want to get insight of hospital setting and clinical treatment because such cases might require a clinical treatment. My skills make me able for such a social work job. I believe that feeling for someone emotionally and going through such circumstances in childhood are strong enough to motivate and encourage a person for social work. Part 2 There is no society that can survive without social and economic justice. Social justice ensures that institutions provide a person what is good for him/her, both individually and in association with others. It imposes a responsibility on all of us that we work together for the betterment of human interaction which we call institutions. On the other hand, economic justice provides a guideline about how a person does business, exchange things and enter into contracts. It ensures that every person has the freedom to pursue his economic growth. For maintaining social and economic justice, it is essential that the system of society facilitates helping people who are needy. I have this perception that every one of us is responsible psychologically for the discriminated treatment to the needy children and women. My career goals revolve around all those attributes which are essential for social work and I am aware that only emotional attachment and childhood experience are not enough for being a successful social work. Some of my career goals include Professional Ethics I will need to know what the ethical and legal policies are and how they are implemented, ensure the provision of clinical facilities if required and maintain trustworthiness among the needy about the organization. Critical Thinking I should know the difference between the fact and the inference and make sure that I do not get biased and keep my emotional self away from the job and act as a responsible employee who can understand the relevance of the data given and interpret it. Task Manager My goal is to become a competitive employee who can handle the job efficiently and complete the duties given to me. I will need to be able complete assigned tasks within the required time and cost. Self Awareness One of my career goals is self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses as it can help excel at work and improve communication with colleagues. Self reflection is also essential for assuming responsibility of protecting my peers and colleagues. Professional Relationships To have a corporate exposure where there is a friendly but professional environment, I will make sure that cooperative and collaborative environment with my colleagues is being sustained, as well as learn to work in team being aware of conflict management and having patience for difference of opinions. Communication I want to improve my communication skills in order to communicate successfully with my colleagues, as well as customers. Within teams, it is vital that everyone has real and true information about the mission and vision of the company and the objective of the organization. Proper coordination is not possible without the communication between team members in a company. Also there are non-verbal cues which need to be understood in social environment. For instance, someone may report a case and giving wrong statements under the influence of any strong party or someone may be not allowed to speak the truth etc., in this case it will be on me to understand through non verbal cues about the reality of situation and then I will probe further about the situation. Clinical Treatment My career goals are also to increase awareness about clinical treatments as many of the cases need one and proper information and knowledge about it ensures that cases are being dealt with properly. There are numerous cases in which victims of such practices require hospital treatments and there is no body to guide them and help them. Also, hospital treatment is required to make those victims stand for themselves and fight for their rights. It is not fair to treat such people as paralyzed or invaluable members of society; they have the right to pursue their economic growth according to social and economic justice. I feel that the person interested in social work should be passionate and competitive, willing to work without any biases for the children who are neglected. I am against the discrimination and I am confident that I can acquire my career goals to pursue my social work aims. Part 3 An emerging practice of the society nowadays is child abuse. Child abuse is not mere broken bones and bruises on a child’s skin, rather emotional abuses and neglecting them are also part of child abuses. It does not happen only in poor families rather rich families also can be involved in it. There are different causes of child abuse practices e.g. an alcoholic father who is unaware of his responsibilities and cannot provide good food, shelter and clothing to family can be a reason of child abuse. Sometimes the reasons of child abuse practices are such that those children are not acceptable for the society like the children of a single mother etc. There can be socio economic causes when it becomes hard for parents to afford the expenses of family and children get neglected or are sent to work to earn. Also some countries like United States have their own child rearing practices. Some practices might be allowed in countries but become child abuse practices in United States, so it depends upon the laws of respective country. Also if parents believe in punishment culture, that also make children isolated from the society and disturb them psychologically. Hence there are different reasons of child abuse practices but the effects of child abuse are very hazardous. It may result in physical and mental impairment of children or even death. Psychologically, such children become weak and distant from society as a result of their complexes. In my view, everyone can contribute depending upon his abilities to prevent child abuse. We can make sure that the laws of child abuse are observed. If we see it happening in front of our eyes in society, we should be bold enough to report them. We should communicate with such children and make them feel an important part of the society, we need to have trust in them and give them confidence, if someone needs clinical treatment we should be kind enough to take him through the hospital treatments. They are deprived of love and we can make them come back to their lives if we give them love and affection. This extreme sense of belongingness to the abused children makes me a really sensitive person who wants to do something for them. I want to be a person who can bring abused children back to life and make them a useful part of our society regardless of their gender and race. Also those who are the culprits should be punished so that nobody is encouraged to make a kid feel that it is a harm to be a kid. I have strong determination to help victims of such inhumane practices. References Bardot, J. (2011) Adverse childhood events and career choices.
