Race and ethnicity Discrimination is as a result of people grouping themselves in cliques who share a common interest. They may share a common culture, gender, race or even social status. These social distinctions tend to shape the lives and to think of people towards certain extremes. For instance, you might find the blacks living in Georgia while whites dominate parts of Washington. The American goal was to rid of all discriminations that may arise and live as a single nationality. This comprises of all beliefs and allows peaceful and respectful living of one’s culture. This paper investigates the discrimination that may come up due to race and ethnicity and tries to provide a solution. Race refers to a group of people who have differences in their biological traits viewed to be socially significant by the society. For instance, Caucasian or the blacks whose physical appearance differ. Ethnicity, on the other hand, refers to shared cultural practices, perspectives, and distinctions that set apart a group of people from another. The racial differences include different eye color or skin color. Though intensive campaigns against racial discrimination have taken place, racial discrimination still takes place in our societies. The Martin Luther King dream of people not being discriminated based on their skin color. The government also banned slave trade in the past because it was inhuman to the blacks. The most common ethnic discrimination is differences in the language, religion, and form of dressing. Long ago, people’s skin color formed the basis of discrimination. African-Americans faced segregation from the society were not viewed as intellectuals. Differences in political standing and beliefs lead to ethnic divisions. Brook’s article reckons in Washington Democratic lawyers live in suburban Maryland, and Republican lawyers reside in suburban Virginia. He quotes, ‘to group themselves with people who are basically like themselves’ even in their workplaces (Brooks 307).The two differ in their opinion on the political basis. The Democrats’ believe the government should play a role in caring well for their citizens even if it means paying more taxes. They uphold the principle pay-to-make policy. Democrats also support legalization to protect gays and lesbian marriage. Some not all believe same-sex marriage should be legal. On the other hand, Republicans think the government should have limited roles in our daily life. They support low or no tax systems claiming that if the government would lower taxes people would get to spend more and thus fuel the economy. The mentioned views tend to put a split between Republicans and Democrats living together. Despite the emphasis placed on acceptance and respect on one’s culture, there still exist a divide. It is the duty of every person to shun from such discrimination. Tolerance to another’s culture and beliefs will unite Americans into one nation. People's social status is as a result incomes disparity, which cluster individuals at the same income levels from those of different income earnings. Therefore, the rich and the poor tend to live in different areas. For instance, Brook says the rich tend to cluster in one area. David says if were to import wine you would sell the product to the wealthy. Locating it in areas where the rich live would create an assurance of reliable market system. This depicts that there is some separation in the society due to one’s social class. The rich tend to cluster in one area. The wealthy and well educated tend to intermarry amongst them. This shows that people look for others who share the same background. Christianity also contributes to social divisions. The beliefs and church doctrines tend to put a split in people. There are Christians who attend mainstream churches while others attend charismatic churches. They believe a marriage partner from your congregation would allow you to intermingle and become more intimate. This may be in line with the doctrines presented in their church. However, this only puts a divide; a more integrated approach will bring people close to one another. A mainstream church Christian should be accommodative to a charismatic church Christian. This will get rid of any bias based on religion. More Christians should undertake roles in filmmaking, media, and academia. Christianity also contains demonstrating care for the next person. This, however, does not occur since many Christians segregate themselves from the above industries. Cultural practices fuel separation among people. Some bits of ethnicity include sharing most if not all of the cultural beliefs. For instance communities who uphold mountain biking is predominant in Colorado. Brook states, ‘once Boulder, Colorado became congenial to politically progressive mountain bikers.' Alternatively, the people living in Montgomery, Pennsylvania believe that RVs are uncool compared to Monroe County people. Since long ago people are advised to adopt and respect others cultures. On the contrary, people still hold on to their culture fearing that once they lose that they would lose their sense of life. In my opinion, people should respect and learn others cultures for integral living. This encourages people to live together and still express their way of life. In conclusion, the point of acquiring citizenship is live as on nationality, Americans. Ethnicity and Racism should not fuel the segregation, but favor living in harmony. It is human to differ in opinions based on political stands, and social status but the goal is to live in consideration of fellow citizens as one. Growing in different environments, such as learning in various institutions will allow us to have an all-round experience and appreciate other people. Among the solution is to adopt each other’s culture. With the adoption of one’s culture, many people will respect various practices and ensure peace amongst communities.
