Sociological Study - Admission/Application Essay Example

Sociological Study Sociology being the study of social behavior, its organization and development, I undertook a field study in our school dinning hall. The time that I went to undertake the study was at noon when students come to take their lunch. It was on 19th November 2014. The hall has a capacity to hold about a hundred students. The hall also has several tables that can be used by six people while taking their meals. In the serving area, there are three ladies who serve the students different types of meals and drinks.

The hall has four television screens in different angles to sooth the position of the students. During my observation, I noted that students entered the hall mostly in groups of three to four. The procedure was to first pay for what meal and drink you want then you are served. Those who came in groups would be served their meals and settle on one of the tables. It was evident that as they took their meal they could engage in conversations with each other. As for those who came alone to eat their lunch, they could stick to the television screens or be using their phones.

In the fifteen minutes of my observation, the students came in as others went out. There was much interaction as some students made new friends while others talked with their friends that were present in the hall. My interpretation of what I observed is that people like interacting as it is our social nature. This is evident as students entered and left the hall in groups. The different groups had students of the same age bracket. This proved the notion that human beings are comfortable interacting with whom they share same values and life stage.

The waiters who served the food often communicated with the students and this created a friendly environment. It is apparent that the students followed the rules in the hall as they would keep their plates after using them in the right place. As for the students who came alone and sat alone when taking their lunch, most of them would seem to have low self-esteem or were victims of being bullied. In conclusion, I felt that it is the nature of human beings to interact with one another.

This was evident in my observation in the dinning hall as the students mostly ate in groups. I also felt that people should also be taught the dinning etiquette as some students would talk with food in their mouths. Also, I realized that interacting brings out the jovial in people. The communicating skills of the waiters were at par to the required standards, and this made the students follow the rules and regulations of the dinning hall. The impact of this was order in the way the students settled to take their meals.

The observation made me understand the importance of the interpersonal skills in the day-to-day life.
