Islamic Culture and its Influence on Sexuality Culture people belong to forms the environment for theirlife and forms views concerning its various aspects, including social roles, morality and sexuality. Probably one of the most peculiar views on sexuality in observed in the Islamic culture. Traditionally, sexuality in Muslim culture is perceived as a taboo or something that isn’t allowed to be revealed to publicity. This especially concerns female sexuality due to unequal gender roles cultivated in the Islamic society.
Muslim culture is strongly connected with religion and thus many aspects of culture are controlled by religious doctrine. In terms of sexuality, Muslims are rather conservative, seeking to adhere to the laws of Qur’an. First, any sexuality displays are forbidden outside marriage, and that primarily concerns women. Sexuality is not to be demonstrated publically, it is considered to be shameful and is usually punished. The article of Shelina Janmohamed considers the issue of sexuality in the Muslim culture.
According to it, the major problem existing among the Muslims (and women in particular) is lack of information about sexuality provided to them (Janmohamed). Although sexuality and intimacy are believed to serve both for procreation and pleasure, the norms of Islamic morality condemn conversation about sexuality and sex, and thus people remain unaware of their rights and opportunities. However, the situation is slowly improving with more and more women becoming aware of their sexuality and seminars on marriage and intimacy held in different countries of the world.
The author stresses importance of appropriate teachings to be provided for Islamic people and especially teenagers (particularly those who live beyond the borders of Islamic world), because complete absence of information might worsen taboos and create a distorted attitude and even negativity about sexuality and sex (Janmohamed). The article demonstrates the influence of the Muslim culture on the concept of sexuality and implies that sexual behaviors are considerably restricted by Islam for protection of chastity.
However, the tendency towards certain liberalization of views is observed, though it meets criticism. Work Cited:Janmohamed, Shelina. What Muslim women really want in the bedroom, 2013, from: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/sex/10031095/Sex-What-Muslim-women-really-want-in-the-bedroom.html
