Beauty in AdvertisingAdvertisement that reinforces mainstream stereotypes about gender roles and gender expression in societya. Who is the probable or intended audience for the ad you are analyzing? Explain your answer. The car advert with the half-dressed model is targeting men who love cars with super speed. Men are likely to purchase this magazine as well as this car because of the model featured. According to them, owning a car like this will also earn them such a model to ride in the car or just admiring the car and they may end up going out.

The advertisers know this and count on sexism portrayed in the magazine photo to sell them the car to a large target audience. The most interesting thing with the audience in this case is that it will attract both younger and older men without any age limit. b. What is the print ad trying to sell? How does it make its appeal to the potential consumer? The print ad is trying to sell a new car model that is made for speed. In order to appeal to a large audience and hopefully sell to them as well, they let a half-dressed model pose in front of the car oozing sex appeal.

They count on this sex appeal by the model to capture the attention of the male customers. These potential customers will not bother much with the feature of the car as much as they will with the cover model and they might buy the car simply because they want the advert to come real, that is attract such a model with this type of car. c. In your analysis of the print ad, discuss how the bodies are objectified. How they are positioned, whom they are looking at, what they are wearing, how they are shaped, etc.

In what way does the ad emphasize or construct a person’s sexuality? How does it construct a person’s ability to be their own subjects rather than objects to be looked at?The females are objectified as sex symbols and nothing else. Dressing in only bikini, long stiletto leather boots and a half draped shirt on the backside leaves nothing to the imagination. The model in the advert has the perfect skin, weight and body shape and it is a fantasy come true for the male customers. Posing in this way and dressed in this manner leaves the person as merely an object to be looked at and does not bother with the person’s ability to be their own subject. d. How does looking at this ad make you feel as a consumer?

This advert makes me think of the society and its continual sexism and sex appeal. Marketers are using sex to appeal to consumers as they know sex will sell. However in their bid to use sex to sell their products, they are continuing with the gender stereotype and objectifying women as nothing other than sex objects and men as too weak to resist the sex appeal being elicited by women. Advertisement that challenges mainstream stereotypes about gender roles and gender expression in society (http://brightonmanplan.files.wordpress.

com/2012/03/huggies-dad-test.jpg)a. Compare and contrast this ad with the ad from question 1. Which ad do you think is more effective in selling the intended product? Why do you think so?This advert defies the gender stereotype of women being the care givers and hence handling everything concerning the baby. However, the first advert is likely to sell more as its target audience is larger (men of all ages) unlike this advert that targets only women with children using diapers. The sex appeal is also much higher than the gender role appeal. b. In general, what effect(s), if any, do you think the objectification of bodies in the media has on the culture?

Objectification shows the younger generation that this is the way to earn more or get the good things in life. It also brings about a culture where girls will only think themselves beautiful only through objectifying themselves as sex symbols in all careers. The boys on the other hand will be expecting girls to be sex objects at all times and not see any other ability in them. c. Some people may argue that depicting a woman’s body as an object is a form of art. What is your opinion of this point of view?

Explain your reasoningIt is not an art because art is two way not one way but in this case, it is only the woman’s body and not a man’s. This only depicts women as being only good where their bodies are concerned and not brains. The women that do not have the body will therefore be cast aside and considered outsiders and those with the nice body will continue to be objectified.
