Poverty and Food Security in United s Food insecurity in the United s has become an issue of concern due to its persistence even after policies and programs have been developed to deal with it. Even after the implementation of numerous policies and programs by state and federal governments, many American are still faced by the issue of food insecurity. A new attitude towards this issue must therefore be adopted. This will include the involvement of the citizens in agricultural coactivity and developing policies which will encourage settlement of the citizens in agricultural areas.
IntroductionThe issue of food insecurity is one that has affected many people in the United States. Food insecurity is not a problem that is unique to United States; it is a problem that is affecting many nations, including developed nations in the EOCD association, such as Canada. Many policies and programs have been developed to address this issue in the United States, but this has not educed or eliminated the painful impact of food insecurity. The state of food insecurity in the United States is alarming, and this problem is bound to increase in the future, especially with the deterioration of the economy (Cancian, and Sheldon 29).
This has led to a need to look at the issue of food insecurity in order to develop better solutions. To evaluate the food insecurity situation in the United States will require a complete evaluation of already existing programs which are geared towards solving these problems in order to understand why these programs have failed and what can be done in order to solve the problems.Already existing programs such as the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) are some of the attempts to deal with the issue of food insecurity (Meyer and Geoffrey 89).
These programs have faded many challenges and can be hardly regarded as successful due to the fact that they haven’t been able to solve the issues of food insecurity. Even with the implementation of these programs which costs both the state and the federal governments billions of dollars, the issue of food insecurity persists and millions of Americans still go without inadequate high quality food. As a result, there is an increasing need to come up with between policies as well as program which help in dealing with the issue of food insecurity in the United States.
Policy proposalTo be able to achieve this, the United States will have to look at the issue of food insecurity as the responsible of every citizen. It is necessary for the government, both at state and federal levels to look for ways for the citizens to be involved in the process of food production and this means that the citizens should be involved in farming activities. United States is the world’s most urbanized country with a greater majority of this citizens living in urban areas. Needless to say, it is urban dwellers who face the highest risk of food insecurity since they are not agriculturally active.
When this agricultural inactivity is combined with the high unemployment rates which are rising every year, this increases the rates of food insecurity in the country. As a result, it is absolutely necessary for the government to develop policies which will help in increasing the number of Americans who are active in agricultural activity in order to manage the issue of food security. ConclusionThe main advantages of this policy will be the fact that it will be a single solution to a number of problems.
Not only will it solve the issue of food insecurity it will also solve the problems of rising rates of unemployment. This would also solve the problem if increasing populations in the cities and open up the massive countryside for residential purposes. Works CitedMeyer, Daniel, and Geoffrey, Wallace.
