I will take notes on how people would direct me to the appropriate person to talk to, how he or she considers my request, and on what basis they would decide on covering it or not.
I think others would be curious about my taking notes, get scared or more cautious of what they are going to say, & at the same time would lead eventually ask me the reason why I do so. On my behalf, I would feel like I am somewhat trespassing on their privacy and at the same time concerned about getting only filtered information. These feelings could interfere with my ability to as much as possible be a conversationalist during my encounters with people and hinder me from asking important questions that would give me significant insights about my study on how news is digested and then shared with the public.
Proposal for an observational research study:
Place: Public hospitals.
How: Walk in as a normal patient
Research: To find out how public hospitals treat their patients (incoming & outgoing), issues/concerns in running a public hospital
Conducting the research: I would walk into a public hospital pretending to be with someone who is in need of immediate attention and medical care. I would like to know whether the policy system in the specific public hospital works in a “pay-first” scheme regardless of emergency/patient condition.
Comment on a classmate’s proposal:
I think that the proposal to conduct an observational study at a certain restaurant to get to know customer reactions to the food selection offered is something that would not give an in-depth experiment. This is because of the fact that blending in in a restaurant may be easy especially because people are busy eating which would make it easy to do. However, being able to get significant insights into what people think of the food based on their facial reactions is not strong enough to come up with a strong argument since the act of eating is usually and mainly the same for everyone. It would be better if one could actually talk to them about the food and ask them questions like “do you think the food’s price is worth the experience it gives you?”
Article on the negative effects of exposure to violence in media: Early Exposure to TV Violence Predicts Aggression in Adulthood.
The article is basically discussing the effects of children’s exposure to TV violence that resulted in more aggressive behavior of children regardless of sex. Though there has not been any serious case wherein a child’s aggression has caused a serious problem, the bigger concern is that this aggression could be developed later in adulthood which is when it would pose much harm (Early Exposure to TV Violence Predicts Aggression in Adulthood, n.d.). Here the author was manifesting the significance of his study by looking at the future implications of this in society.
Finally, select the initial posting of at least one other classmate and discuss how the described study reflects points raised by Babbie about content analysis and how you would strengthen the study.
Going back to the study of my fellow classmate on conducting the observational study at a restaurant to get feedback on the food quality they offer, I think that the study would really be strengthened if one would observe not as a total stranger, but instead observe as a friend or a companion as the conversations allowed between the two in the scenario would add more depth to the content instead of just relying on physical/facial reactions.
