There are many forms of family violence and not all of them are limited to physical violence or harm. Psychological torture, stalking, neglect, and emotional abuse are also some common forms of family violence. Psychological torture and emotional abuse are extremely difficult to detect and therefore are very hard to combat. These forms of abuse are also extremely harmful for all the parties involved as they hinder personality development and adversely affects family life. Family violence occurs due to a variety of reasons.

Sometimes male partner is just jealous with spouse and therefore resorts to family violence. Other times drinking and drugs play a role in making the male partner violent. Episodes of domestic abuse also occur because violence gives some men a sense of control. Men sometimes also want to establish their physical dominance over their partners and this is another reason why they indulge in domestic violence. There are also mental illnesses and psychological issues that might be responsible for family violence.

Family violence has significant influence on family life and especially on children. It makes spouses feel helpless and negatively affects their self esteem. Children usually don’t understand the reason of family violence and this affects their growth and mental development. Domestic violence also makes children violent as their parents serve as a role model for them and they try to act in a similar manner. Family violence has significant affect on abused women and children. Abused women feel helpless when they are abused by their male partners.

Usually they are not in a position to say anything and therefore have no other option but to tolerate all the abuse. They are very vulnerable because usually they are financially dependent on the male partner (Valentine, 1992). This is why the decision to get out the abused life is not very easy.
