Stratification - Personal Statement Example

Due Stratification There are many ways that society can stratify its members, religion, gender, political views, ethnicity, social class, and, the most common, wealth or income. It is often the nature of society where certain people are inevitably the lesser paid skilled labor and others are the higher paid managers, supervisors, and owners. In these stratified segments of society, some will face predetermined glass ceilings that make their ability to achieve greater promotions and raises far less likely, while others will have all the opportunity in the world for better paying jobs and without limits or restrictions.

Some say that stratification is a by-product of industrialization; simply meaning that in order to have a functioning society in the modern ages, with division of labor and varying skill sets, stratification is a “necessary evil.”("Contemporary problems involving," 2003) That said it seems that in the modern age stratification should not be so inevitable, or necessary to tolerate. Stratification is all too common and only benefits some members of the society and exists as a detriment to others.

Ideally, is there not a better way than that? The article researched, “Contemporary Problems Involving Industrial Development in Canada,” explains that it is the aboriginal peoples that feel that negative sting of stratification more than any other ethnic group living in present day Canada. The government is aware of the limited pay and glass ceiling employment that stratification, in essence, has caused them. Currently government agencies and organizations are working to improve this in regard to the aboriginal peoples.

("Contemporary problems involving," 2003) It seems that as long as the side effects of stratification has been effecting them why is it only in recent years that the issue is being seriously tackled and the means to improve the situation would have been considered, encouraged, and implemented before now. Stratification does not have to be the only guaranteed outcome of industrialization. In some ways stratification allows for legalized bigotry, or, in some cases, outright racism. If there are predetermined limits are any individual’s accomplishments based solely upon their class, race, gender, religion, and cultural background then it is no longer an acceptable practice.
