Uses of the under in America Uses of the underclass in America In the work of Gans (1995), the term underclass refers to a group of persons in the community that occupy a lower hierarchy in the society, that is mostly not in the working class, or close to the working class. This class has had a long history in the society, until its popular use in the 20th century. A close analysis of this work can be analyzed to criticize the blacks in America who were living in poverty.

The underclass is economically exploited, since they are barred from full access to the labor market, live in miserable conditions and have unusual behaviours. This is form the fact that most are hustlers and others are addicted to drugs. With the increasing numbers of joblessness among this population, Gans (1995) indicates that violence and crime will continually be a challenge in the society. Generally, this class of persons can be discussed as one that holds completely dissimilar views as compared to those of the entire society.

An understanding of the underclass concept, in relation to Gans (1995), needs to be analyzed in terms of the causes of the concept- which relates to inequalities in the society- and the consequences that result from these inequalities, which are inclusive of delinquent behaviours by the populace of the underclass. However, the privileged Americans tend to think of the entire case as they think the underclass is not willing to work. Reference Gans, H. (1995). Uses of the underclass in America.
