Some of the engineering codes of ethics include NSPE, IEEE, and ADME. Recently I have encountered cases where engineers take a bribe to compromise the quality of a project. In such case, the engineer is bribed by the financier of the project to allow usage of substandard materials and equipment. I have also encountered engineer who offers services that are not related to their area of competence. An electrical engineer offering consultancy in a civil engineering field was a common encounter. There are several issues involved in the misconduct of engineers and most of them if not all are related to the public safety. Usage of substandard material and equipment compromises people’s safety. In particular, projects such as buildings that have been constructed this way are a major threat to people’s safety. Although most engineering fields are closely related, some differences determine the competence of resultant professions. A civil engineer who gives consultancy on a project intended to be an electrical engineering project gives out wrong or incompetent information and therefore fails to meet the professional ethical code of conduct.
