Human Sexuality in the Film Boys Don't Cry - Essay Example

Diversity in human sexuality was portrayed in the film as something undesirable, especially in a rural town in the Midwest U.S. where people are overly conservative about sexual matters and opinions.

Human sexuality is very complex and does not pertain to a person's biological or physical gender only. This is because sexuality is the totality of a person's attitudes which in turn includes sexual behavior and mentality. Gender diversity in this film is represented as the struggle of the main character to become a man despite being a biological female through his conscious choice in terms of mannerisms, behavior, and cross-dressing to attract a female. This is portrayed as the main theme which brought about that gruesome murder in Nebraska.

The film “Boys Don't Cry” explores the female lead character's journey to being a male as a fight for individual freedom and choice rather than as a mere illustration of sexuality. The most poignant moment in the film was when Brandon was raped to force her to become a woman.  It was quite a revolting experience to watch this segment. The film challenged my notions of sexuality; it means sexuality and gender need not be alike. A good practice issue is to treat this person as someone who is normal and needs empathy and support (Dunlap 1). In other words, a person like Brandon needs our utmost understanding and acceptance.
