Social Work System – Child Welfare Before going to discuss the social work system of child welfare, let us get a better understanding of what childwelfare actually is. Child welfare means the ways to ensure children wellness and safety. Child welfare system deals with the social issues of child abuse and child labor, which have become two of the major social issues of the world. Rise in child labor is associated with the rise in poverty all over the world. Child welfare system includes such policies and procedures, which help social workers in dealing with the critical social justice issues.
Social justice means that every person living in any part of the world is entitled to same civil and rights and services. When some people are deprived of their rights, the effects occur on their children in the form of low class education in order and low standard of life. Child welfare system takes care of the rights of such children and ensures their wellbeing. For example, America has the largest number of children living in poverty at present. “Child welfare system can address the well-being of a much larger number of children now growing up in poverty” (Lindsey, 1994).
Role of social workers is very important in child welfare system. Social workers hold the responsibility of finding such children who are facing some kind of child abuse and reporting such cases to the concerned authorities, such as, law enforcement agencies. Social workers also raise their voice against child labor. The workers find their clients through personal struggle and sometimes through media. Media reports such cases to make government aware of social injustice and social workers take those cases to raise struggle for the victims.
Social workers work at individual as well as at community level. They try to bring positive changes to the society. in case of child welfare system, social workers find the needs of their clients through interviews and close observations and design appropriate interventions to meet their needs. They undergo hard struggle at times to provide their clients with their deserved rights. Theories for social work guide their practices and help them focus on clients. Practice theories explain social environment and human behaviors to the workers and assist them in bringing positive changes in the society.
In child welfare system, social workers have a deep understanding of different behaviors of children. They know which behaviors are not common in children. They work to figure out the causes and provide psychological treatment to the children. They remain in touch with the children to know whether their interventions worked well or not. If we talk about the educational requirements of social workers in child welfare system, we can say that BA, BSc, or diploma in social work works well for them.
A social worker needs to have a positive mindset more than experience. Social work in child welfare system is something, which also needs a good and caring attitude towards children along with education. Child welfare system influences social problems that exist in a society and makes government and law enforcement agencies take suitable actions to deal with the problems identified by the social workers working for the system. My assessment of the relationship between the philosophical intentions of social work, the American mindset regarding this system, the people involved in the system, and the social system itself makes me feel good about the system.
I feel that both American people and the government want to solve the problems of unprivileged children and for that reason, they are assisting the cause of social workers working for this system.
