The six social groups I identified were selected based on race, ethni body type, and mental status, and age. The groups are Blacks, Latinos, Asians, old people, obese people, and psychiatric patients. The culture of each group has been subject to different stereotypes based on cultural perspectives. Blacks used to be the biggest minority in the US historically until Latinos surpassed them. The total US Latino population is approximately 15.5% (Census, 2010). One of the stereotypes about Blacks is that they are gangsters and criminals.
This stereotype is wrong because criminality occurs across all demographics characteristics possible. A fact that might open up discussion about the subject is that 1 out of every 10 Black men is either in prison or was once in jail (Palmer, 1999). The police have historically discriminated against Blacks. The Rodney King beating and subsequent innocent verdict against the unlawful police men that beat him led to the L.A. Riots of 1991. Latinos are stereotyped as being sexually promiscuous. This stereotype might be true since population is growing at faster rate than the general U.S. population.
Asians have been stereotypes as being smarter than most Americans. There is no empirical proof that Asian Americans are smarter than other Americans. Old workers have been stereotypes as working slower. This is a myth constructed based on a bias opinion. Psychiatric persons are discriminated and stereotypes as crazy people. When taking their medications most psychiatric patients can function normally in society. Obese people are faced discrimination as they are perceived as lazy and slow. This is a bias opinion that is not true.
Out of the six groups I selected three had a direct correlation with race: Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. I selected these three groups because they are the three biggest minority groups in the United States. A lot of Hispanics face prejudice from the Border Patrols who harass legal U.S. citizens with the excuse they are looking for immigrants. Hispanics have not received the same opportunity to climb the corporate ladder to land executive managerial positions as Caucasians. Blacks have been historically discriminated by the police and justice department.
Racial profiling is an unethical tactic used by the police in the United States. Asians have been discriminated and associated with criminal organizations that import arms and drugs from the Asia into the United States. Asians ironically are perceived as being smarter than the average Americans which is a good prejudice perspective. Each of the six groups faced similar dilemmas when looking for work, but some are discriminated more than others. The Hispanic community is very educated because education is a cultural responsibility the parents have to provide to their kids.
The Blacks are victims of the unemployment epidemic. Blacks are the race group in the United States with the highest unemployment rate at 16% (Bls, 2011). Ageism is type of discrimination that is on the rise. Companies are not being fair to senior citizens applying for jobs because they believe that young men that don’t have pensions deserve the job more. Psychiatric patients are discriminated against if they reveal their disease to a potential employer or to their current employer. Asians are an advantageous position since culturally the American perceived them as smarter and more disciplined which are good traits in the workplace.
Obese people face discrimination particularly in industries such as the fashion industry in which physical beauty is exploited. ReferencesBls.gov (2011). Employment Situation Summary.
