How does the media impact social problems? According to Loseke and Best, there have been variances in defining a social problem; which is a condition that is harmful to individuals in a society and requires an urgent remedy. Various forms of media and especially the web can be considered in the process of understanding social problems. Media is responsible for diffusing information, socializing people, influencing public opinion on voting, violence and sexuality (40).Homosexuality is often seen as a common social problem.

Unfortunately, the society defines it as a disease which hinders lots of gays and lesbians from coming out in the open due to fear of discrimination. The media have impacted homosexuality by promoting it through airing programs with aspects of homosexuality, coverage of demonstrations by homosexuals and even screening gay marriages. This in turn has promoted that as a social problem, making it look like any other norm (Loseke and Best 58). Crime is a dangerous social problem in the world today.

Sadly, the media is considered to be on the forefront of promoting this social problem through reality television. In most cases reality television portrays individuals engaged in various criminal activities as heroes or heroines, thereby influencing some individuals in the society to idolize crime (Loseke and Best 29).Society uses norms, rules and culture to define what is moral or immoral. Consequently immorality is more than a social problem in any society. The media through television talk shows enable individuals in a society to construct and inculcate what is moral or immoral therefore, influencing public opinion on what is moral or immoral (Loseke and Best 68).
