Coping With Stress in a Complex World Stress is a huge part of our modern lives. The pressures of balancing many – and sometimes conflicting – responsibilities can take its toll on a person and if unaddressed, can seriously affect one’s well-being. It is of little wonder therefore that many resources have come out with the aim of helping people deal with it. One such resource is a book entitled “The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook”, written by Martha Davis, Matthew McKay and Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman.

It was first published in 1980 by New Harbinger Publications. Many editions later, it is still a veritable treasure trove of techniques and strategies to cope with stress. The main objective of the book is to come up with simple and doable stress management techniques that individuals can practice in the confines of their homes. A feature of this book which distinguishes it from other self-help books is that it is work-book with actual exercises, and not just text. It gives simple directions for breathing and meditation, for example, and teaches visualization and progressive relaxation.

These directions are given in a step-by-step fashion so they are easy to follow even by beginners who might find themselves easily daunted by complicated exercises. Also, it is not necessary to read the book from cover-to-cover – a stressful endeavor in itself, considering its volume. One only has to browse through the chapters and look at the symptoms described. If these symptoms apply to them, then they can try the stress reduction method suggested. That way, it is a quick reference guide rather than a textbook.

Another good thing about the book is that it also teaches you how to deal with stress in the long-term. In fact, it gives nutrition advice to teach you what kinds of food to consume for a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle. It also teaches proper time management so a person avoids fatigue and over-exertion. These strategies see stress management as a lifestyle rather than as a one-shot deal. This leads to more sustainable solutions for the individual. The book is 12.59 dollars purchased from Amazon, not an expensive read.

However, it is probably not for those who find reading stressful as they will find the book too text-heavy and might be better off joining a stress support book. For those who find work books and books in general a recreational activity, this book would be of immense help. It also gives leads into other useful stress-reduction resources. In sum, this book is a worthwhile read for those coping with stress. It is a great starting point and is the first step on the road to wellness. Do yourself a favor, shut out the world and the noise, and get a copy.

A more relaxed life is on its way.Reference:Davis, M., McKay, M., and Eshelman, E. (1980) The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook. Oakland: New Harbinger Publications.
