What Do You Mean I Can't Write by John FieldenWhat Do You Mean I Can't Write is an essay written by John Fielden, which was published in 1984. It is a how-to piece aimed at managers as well as employees who want to improve on their skills as they aim for career promotions or those engaged in businesses who want to learn communication and business writing. Fielden, in the essay, argued that the skill in communication and writing well is invaluable for companies that is why managers and employees capable of these skills are highly valued.

With this in mind, the author provided a checklist of the elements of good writing with the idea that it is a means for individuals and groups to improve their writing skills. The essay explored communication and writing extensively. Communication was categorized into upward and downward communication: The former required abilities such as tact, attention to details, opinion as well as the correct attitude while the latter was all about diplomacy, clarification of desires and motivational aspects.

In regard to the writing aspect, it was stressed that the most important element was the thought content. Some specific helpful sections include letter writing performance checklist and 19 critical elements of punctuation and grammar. The essay also has outlined guides in conveying diplomatically critical and sensitive information as well as composing high-impact letters that are said to be inspiring, persuasive, those that close sales and get results. The essay is projecting itself as an easy-to-use desk reference for managers and his staff to communicate and write in order to get the job done.
