Double Standards in American Society - Essay Example

            One of the most common double standards present in American society is based on gender. It is irrefutable that this society expects men and women to be different from each other by subjecting them to two different standards. Men are expected to be more aggressive while women are supposed to be more submissive and reserved. It is readily accepted that some things are naturally “men’s” things while some are “women’s.” For example, a man who is attracted to a pretty woman can always ask her out. However, a woman asking a man out is less acceptable. The commencement of a relationship is seen as the “right” of every guy while ladies can only accept it.

            The essay will look at the different double standards based on gender. The first section will look at the most common double standards present in society.  Afterward, the essay will expose the arguments for and against double standards. It will also contain various citations from different authors and social scientists who are experts in this topic. In the end, I will give my own opinion regarding the essay.

On Double Standards

            The fate of an individual is undeniably almost always determined by sexuality. It is irrefutable that the society where are living in has this preconceived notion of what is right and what is acceptable action for each gender. Currently, society has readily accepted that some things are naturally “men’s” things while some are “women’s.” The presence of double standards is an undeniable fact. Both sexes have been subjected to impartiality when society evaluates their actions. The widespread popularity of double standards has cultivated the notion that persons are judged not by “what they do”  but by “what they are.”

            Suppose someone is known to have slept with twenty people. It is irrefutable that people’s reactions to sexual experiences will significantly depend on one thing—gender. If the person concerned is a guy, he will surely be admired by the whole male community and earn their respect. He will make a good impression on girls which breeds attraction and desire. He will be receiving compliments and be labeled as a “player.” On the other hand, a girl with the same sexual experience will surely become subject to ridicule and disrespect. Guys will take advantage of her, use her, and try to get her to bed. She will have a hard time having girlfriends as she will surely be avoided and despised out of disgust.
