Social scientists use a number of methodologies including both quantitative as well as qualitative methods to collect data. The tolls used in other fields are often used by social scientists to understand the basic workings of the society. The book, “Sociologist Backstage (2010) is written by Fenstermaker and Jones and it deals with the different aspects of the research being done on social science. Different sources of research only show the conclusion and sometimes even the methodology of the research process.

Along with this, the required materials and hypothesis etc are also shown for the readers. But published work fails to show the actual process of research along with the problems faced by the researchers. This book, however, takes a step further by including the feelings and sufferings of the researchers while working for such projects. It also includes the solutions the researchers found for such everyday life problems and how these affected their personal lives. It sums up the happenings of a researcher`s life so that people can see what they will go through during their research adventures.

As stated earlier, sociology is a study of the society as a whole including everything that dwells within it. . It shows that the research process is not as simple as shown by published materials. It reveals the entire mechanism and choices made by researchers during this process. The book includes real life interviews of seventeen such researchers which further give diversified views and explanations of the research journeys. The book has an advantage of providing first hand interviews of people describing their research adventures along with the issues and challenges.

Because of this invaluable information, this book is said to add up to the knowledge of all social science researchers. This book is a must read for all those planning to get involved with this career. This book changes the perceptions of all the readers because of a number of reasons. Firstly, it shows that not everything in life is as it looks. Students studying undergraduate are lured into this field by focusing on the positives of research in sociology. However, this book reveals the truth of this field, whether good or bad, by showing real life interviews of real researchers.

Secondly, it enhances the decision making and analyzing capabilities of the readers as they are motivated to distinguish between the classroom explanations and the real life experiences. Readers can actually relate with the scholars as they explain their intellectual and memorable adventures in their interviews. The book is an actual confession of real researchers and their procedure of work. Personally, I have always been intrigued by a number of research articles and experiments. This book has strengthened my interest in this field of research by including the actual actions of real researchers.
