Cultures today have become diffused so much so that there has been a rise of what would be termed as global citizens and intercultural mobility. Social subjects easily learn about different cultures around the world that by picking various elements of cultures from across the world, they become mobile as they can fit in different cultural contexts. The universal human desire for intercultural mobility is further driven by the human desire for exploration, and to reach opportunities of growth in other geographical areas around the world.

Social subjects cannot be constrained in restrictive environments that stifle growth and development, and as a result, they will be motivated to move towards areas of opportunity and growth (Cole 65). Conflict theorists and functionalists have divergent views on mobility; whereas the conflict theorists believe social stratification is dysfunctional in society and all forms of stratification must be erased, the functionalists argue that social stratification is necessary in society. The conflict theorists are opposed to social inequalities that result to unequal distribution of social-economic rewards.

In this regard, conflict theorists would explain the new associations or disorientations that arise as a dysfunctional and destructive system that only privileges the rich who have the power to perpetrate a system that works for them. The functionalists on the other hand argue that unequal distribution of rewards is necessary if society has to match the most talented social subjects with the most challenging tasks (“The Functionalist Theory…”). In their view, some social subjects are most suitable for certain roles than others and as such, they should be the ones to undertake the most challenging tasks in.

This essay stresses that conflict theorists and functionalists have divergent views on mobility; whereas the conflict theorists believe social stratification is dysfunctional in society and all forms of stratification must be erased, the functionalists argue that social stratification is necessary in society. The conflict theorists are opposed to social inequalities that result to unequal distribution of social-economic rewards. In this regard, conflict theorists would explain the new associations or disorientations that arise as a dysfunctional and destructive system that only privileges the rich who have the power to perpetrate a system that works for them.

The functionalists on the other hand argue that unequal distribution of rewards is necessary if society has to match the most talented social subjects with the most challenging tasks This paper makes a conclusion that social subjects become disoriented based on the distribution of the spatial conditions that determine social organization; they will be motivated to move under the promise of economic or device rewards. The conflict theorists and functionalists perceive mobility differently; the conflict theorists explain mobility as a conscious effort by the lower classes to subvert the stratified social system.

The functionalists explain mobility as a self-sustaining mechanism by which the most important positions in society are rewarded to the most qualified individuals.
