Should Abortion Continue being Legal in America?

Introduction

           For a long time, states and governments have been debating on the topic of whether abortion should be legalized. This topic has received a lot of controversies. In America, the debate on this topic has caused division among Americans. In October 2019, The New York Times released a report on various states, including Alabama, that presented a bill in the Federal Court to ban abortion in the United States. The bill was referred to as the Alabama law (Rojas & Blinder 2) However, a federal judge went ahead to block the law. According to the judge, abortion should remain to be legal in Alabama and the whole of America (Rojas & Blinder 2). Myron Thompson, the US District Court from Alabama District judge, opposed the Alabama law claiming that it violated the precedent of the Supreme Court and defied the constitution (Rojas & Blinder 2). Besides, thousands of Americans, including abortion campaigners and democrats, protested against the new laws meant to ban abortion. They argued that the news laws violated their constitutional right to terminate the pregnancy.

Opponents of the Alabama law claimed that the new abortion laws were too restrictive (Rojas & Blinder 2). The law restricted women who become pregnant as a result of rape. The law only allowed abortion when a woman’s life is in danger. I oppose the actions of the democrats, abortion campaigners, and the federal judge for blocking the new laws meant to illegalize abortion in America. This is because abortion violates moral and religious beliefs. Abortion is also unsafe, as many people have died trying to abort. It violates the right to life (Rojas & Blinder, 2). Human life starts after fertilization; hence, when an individual aborts an unborn child, she kills an innocent human being. Abortion should be banned in America and globally. Many couples have challenges of conceiving biologically and are willing to adopt. Due to this reason, it would fair if women who are not ready to bring up their children to have them adopted by such couples. This paper evaluates the argument on whether abortion should continue being legal in the US. 

Benefits of legalizing abortion

           According to opponents of the new abortion laws, abortion should continue being legal America as it brings several benefits to individuals and society. 

Preventing death together with other critical health-related risks

           Those who oppose the new laws of banning abortion claim that it prevents deaths along with other health-related risks (ABC News 7). Abortion prevents a pregnant mother together with her unborn child from death. This happens when both the mother and the unborn baby have several health complications likely to cause death. Some of these complications include ectopic pregnancy, preeclampsia, and HELLP syndrome (ABC News 7). Some countries only allow a pregnant woman to procure an abortion when she has health complications. Opponents argue that the US government should completely legalize abortion (ABC News 7). If a woman is not ready to give birth or take care of a child, she should be granted the right to abort. This can prevent deaths and other complications women experience when giving birth. 

Population control

           Opponents of the new abortion laws in the US claim that legalizing abortion would greatly help the country to reduce its high population (ABC News 7). They argue that abortion is an effective way of controlling the population. A huge population is likely to overwhelm a country in terms of lack of enough food supplies to feed the rapidly growing population. When this happens, people experience hunger, food deficiency diseases, a rise in crimes, and starvation (ABC News 7). As such, for America to avoid these issues and make sure that its food production is enough to feed its population, it can control its population by allowing people to seek an abortion. Failure to do this, many countries all over the world will perish due to hunger as well as food shortage. 

Dealing with the psychological effects of having a baby as a result of rape

           Opponents of the new abortion laws argue that society is experiencing an increase in rape cases each day. Rape has become a big problem in society (ABC News 7). Many women who are raped end up becoming pregnant. Victims of rape suffer serious psychological problems. This makes it very painful for them to raise a child they got due to rape. Rape causes psychological traumas, including depression, emotional breakdown, hatred, violence towards a child born as a result of rape, and so forth (ABC News 7). Victims of rape have no hope in life because there is no man to claim ownership of the child. This situation can be avoided through abortion. This can help the victim to forget her experience quickly and move on with life without suffering psychological effects. 

Avoiding the pain of single parenting

           Opponents of the new abortion laws argue that abortion should continue being legal because it prevents women from pain and challenges associated with single parenting (ABC News 7). Many women are abandoned by their impregnators, thus, leaving them with the burden of raising their children alone. This also applies to victims of rape. Financial challenges make it hard for a woman to give birth and raise a child that came as a result of rape (ABC News 7). Therefore, if abortion continues being legal in America, women will no longer have to raise children with a lot of hardships. 

Shortcomings of legalizing abortion

           I oppose the opinions and actions of opponents of the new abortion laws due to the negative impacts associated with abortion. 

Murder

           A woman who procures abortion for reasons other than medical or health complications commits murder (Schwartz 1331). Many women go for abortion mainly to avoid responsibilities. This wrong as an innocent baby is killed. Human life starts after fertilization. As such, they are terminating the life of an unborn child violates its right to life. Women who intentionally abort their unborn babies should be charged in court for committing murder (Schwartz 1331). Therefore, the government should ban abortion because if they do so, many women will be careless by engaging in unsafe sex because they have the option of aborting if they are unwilling to give birth and raise a child. Instead of killing an innocent child, women should give their children for adoption. 

Death

           Many women, especially in developing nations, have lost their lives in the process of abortion. Also, many women who go for abortion end up developing health complications (Schwartz 1331). The majority of them die during the abortion process or after the procedure. Sometimes, induced abortion results in the death of the unborn child and the mother. Due to this reason, if the government continues legalizing abortion, many deaths are likely to be reported due to the complications that emerge in the process of abortion (Schwartz 1331). Therefore, abortion should be banned in the US to avoid many cases of deaths associated with abortion. 

Infertility

           Abortion involves some serious risks like infertility. It is linked with critical health complications such as bleeding, womb damage, uterine perforation, and damage abdominal organs (Schwartz 1331). It is important to note that such complications are likely to cause permanent infertility. Every woman has a dream of giving birth to her children; hence, a woman who becomes infertile due to procuring abortion may end up living a regretful and painful life (Schwartz 1331). Abortion is one of the factors that contribute to childless mothers in the world. 

Psychological trauma

          I support the new laws to ban abortion in America because of the psychological trauma it causes to people who decide to abort without any medical reasons. Studies indicate that abortion victims suffer negative psychological issues. Many victims of abortion suffer post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual dysfunction, suicidal thoughts, and repeat abortion (Schwartz 1331). They also suffer from psychological problems such as drug abuse, alcoholism, divorce, depression, violent behavior, guilt, relationship problems, and child abuse and neglect. These psychological problems are dangerous, and a victim may end up dying (Schwartz 1331). Therefore, such cases can reduce if the US federal government passes laws to ban this practice. 

Violation of religious beliefs

           No religion supports abortion. Religion regulates societal behaviors (Schwartz, 1331). It is meant to shape people in society to embrace good living and morality. Due to this reason, abortion violates religious beliefs and values. Abortion contributes to moral decay and disorderliness, which are rapidly increasing across the world due to governments that have legalized abortion (Schwartz 1331). Women should understand that choosing to procure abortion goes against religious values. Therefore, abortion is immoral; thus, it should be avoided.

Conclusion

           I believe that abortion is an immoral and risky practice. The US government should allow a woman to procure abortions only when she is having dangerous health complications. The other conditions of abortion should be illegalized. Victims of rape should not be allowed to abort their unborn babies. Instead, they should be rehabilitated to help them keep the baby. They should be given psychological support until they stabilize. This should be free of charge. Also, single parents seeking an abortion should be empowered both socially and financially. This can be achieved by giving them employment or helping them start a business. This can help them to bring up their children without any challenges. The majority of people who seek abortion are teenagers. Due to this reason, if abortion continues being legal, this will encourage them to continue living an immoral lifestyle without protecting themselves from getting pregnant. Therefore, abortion should be banned in America and globally, and those who procure an abortion without a doctor's recommendation should be charged with murder.
