ID Lecturer Integrative Paper This story surrounds an ethical dilemma which took place with John whenhe was about to launch a new range of mobile products for his organization. The basis of this ethical dilemma is centered on the premise of fulfilling the companys objectives yet being subjected to some problems on his part as far as organizations other interests were related. What he did was the need of the hour and this is the reason why his case has been chosen for this paper. John chose to tell the company at a later stage what he had to go through in order to satisfy the organizations mission and vision. It happened when John was assigned the task of managing the organizational launch of a new line of mobile phones. He was assigned the role of managing the smooth launching of the product into the national market. Even though John had vast experience of launching different products from time to time, this turned out to be significant. The reason for this was that he had to launch it in a way that chose to tell people of a feature which was not actually available within the mobile phone. This was a difficult task on his part and his ethics did not allow him to fall for such a gimmick that the organization was willing to undertake. This was something unacceptable for John since he had learned to be ethical in his work tasks and even professionally. He had to do something which was uncalled for and not related to his professional self. The ethical dilemma came up because John was asked by his organization to play on the very feature to make sure that the sale gets amplified within a specific time period. He was asked to showcase his true talent of making a sale and that too quickly so that the launch could be deemed as successful. John was clearly told that his work tasks should focus on the launch of the mobile phone and nothing else. This was the reason why he had to bank on this launch as far as his work domains were concerned. John had to bring about a sale which was not true and did not speak honestly with the intended end users. The company was making a false claim and doing so in a very unethical fashion. John’s peers were expecting quite a lot from him since his experience was such that this launch was a part and parcel of how he managed things in the past. It was like a norm for him and thus did not pose as a problem as far as his work realms were related. John decided to speak about this scenario to his immediate boss but he was not helpful. He tried his best to make his point clear but it did not come about in an easy fashion. This was because he wanted to clear everything up close and personal and that too beforehand; however this did not suffice at all. His boss was more adamant on getting the job done because this is what was being communicated by the organization and that the mobile phone had to be ‘different’ in terms of its offering which was not being given by any other competing mobile phone in the market. An interesting thing that came about after his discussion with his boss was that he was made a target and was asked to concentrate solely on the task at hand. He was asked by the human resource management department to be proactive in his domains and get the job done without teaching the organization as to what was deemed as ethical and what was not. This was a complicated scenario for John and he had to make-do with it at all costs, otherwise his job was under serious scrutiny. In order to solicit an ethical response from the organization, it was imperative that John spoke his mind to someone who had more authority and who could resolve his ambiguities and concerns. It was deemed as necessary because he would not do something derogatory or unethical which would essentially hurt his conscience more than anything else. In order to resolve this problem, John decided to meet the Chief Executive Officer of the company. He did not involve his direct boss in it because he knew nothing would transpire and that the latter was more interested in introducing the mobile phone in the market with a fake feature than anything else. Ethics was something distant to his domains therefore he was not someone who would be a part of John’s concerns that he had with ethics anymore. In order to get his point transferred, he went to the human resources management department and asked them the manner under which he could meet the CEO. The human resource manager detailed John about the exact procedure under which this was possible. John followed all the necessary steps and sent in an e-mail to make sure the formalities were duly covered. He was given a time and a meeting was set up in the CEO’s room. The CEO listened to his point and also the comprehension which he had regarding the ethical point. John told him that ethics were important because he had learned to follow such a dictum all his life. The CEO appreciated his concern and the fact that he went ahead and did something on his own. He assured him that he would do something in the best interest of the organization and that ethical values will be followed to the hilt. Indeed this was a positive step on the part of John which paid dividends in the long run. After John’s meeting with his CEO, the decision to launch the new mobile phone product was put on hold. The CEO decided to do away with the processes which were on-going at that stage. This meant that the CEO acted upon his advice to do something which would benefit the organization in the long run as well as follow business ethics. He understood where the organization was going wrong and what needed to be done by employees like John who have to be truthful at all times. John was appreciated for being honest but what he looked up to was a nod that something morally right will be done. And the result was actually what John wanted. The CEO immediately asked his senior managers to call off the launch for a specified time period. He asked the brand team to come up with a feature which was actually available within the new mobile phone that shall be marketed properly. He also told Johns unit head to pull up his socks and do what was ethically right. What was most appreciative on Johns part was the fact that his identity was not disclosed at any stage which actually gave him the confidence to be more truthful and honest in his dealings in the future. John realized he had done something right all along to deserve such satisfaction. John was able to save the organizational philosophy to be morally right under all situations and circumstances. In essence, John had done the public a favor by choosing a mobile phone which was being advertised in terms of its features truthfully. John was ecstatic that the CEO of the company was someone who he could look up to in the future whenever there were ethical dilemmas experienced on his part. This made him feel even more confident within the realms of the office place. It actually raised Johns worth in the eyes of the management and made them realize that John thought well of the organization and the several businesses that were being managed. It made the CEO realize that John was someone who would always think well of the organization and hence be given promotion if he so wished. On the whole, John had undergone serious ethical dilemma at work and in the end, it was resolved amicably. What transpired was an understanding that set things right in essence. It oversaw how work should have been done and how success could have been found right from the very beginning. There was immense learning for John and he took this well within his stride. What mattered now was that this ethical drive would continue for as long as possible. On his part, John was able to turn a new leaf as far as his work mechanisms were concerned. This was an eye-opener for John because it made him realize that there is always a solution to everything unimaginable. It paved the way for many tasks which were unresolved when he was going through the said dilemma at work. Essentially speaking, this worked wonders for John as he learned many new things and started trusting the premise of being ethical at all times. It made him feel good that honesty always pays dividends no matter how trying or tough the circumstances turn out to be in the end. Read More
