Personal ment It is my firm conviction that every experience in life, whether in a relative sense an individual associates it with positive or negative implications in one’s life, eventually stands to be an opportunity to learn. The learning experiences and efforts of the people are directly affiliated to the kind of life they tend to live and the problems they tend to face while going through the course of life. In the light of this fact people try to make the best of their aptitude and inclinations to endow themselves with the knowledge and skills that better enable them to face and get over the notions and situations they consider to be challenging. To put it in simple words, the practical implications of this premise in the context of my personal life is that my academic ambition and efforts were in a way always intricately intertwined with what life presented to me at different instances and moments. May sound clichéd, but it is a fact that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I belonged to quiet an affluent family and this experience casted a direct shadow on my early academic ambitions. Though, my parents, as is the case with most of the caring and responsible parents, expected me to work hard and do well at school, me having an easy access to all the basic necessities of life, and much more, my attitude towards academics was relatively complacent and easy going. It is not that I intended to take life casually and irresponsibly, but I felt that since I was from a well provided and well endowed family, I do afford to take is easy. To a great extent it was true. Academic pursuits and studies did interest me, but in a very loosely and liberal sense that though I liked to read and learn, yet these efforts were not very systematic in the sense that I never intended them to materialize into exceptional grades. I felt that my primary concern should be to learn and experience things and not to let my education interfere with what I considered to be real education. This also worked for me in the sense that it was a pragmatic fact that going by my immediate family circumstances, I knew I was never to compete for a job. Everything was going fine, until the catastrophe struck us in an unexpected way. Our well established family business was totally annihilated by a large corporate firm. This changed the things in many ways. Indeed, this had an immense impact on the entire family and the way of life we were used to. Yet, to put it more precisely, it had a great impact on me. Whatever I was, I was never a person given to daydreaming and fantasizing. I immediately geared up to the reality and facts. A thorough analysis of the family situation soon led me to the conclusion that now the things were not the same. My sense of responsibility and sincerity forced me to face the fact that I should not now expect my family to provide me with the comfort and stability that I once had. Instead, I should do whatever was possible to emerge as an asset to the family so that they should not unnecessarily worry about me. I decided that somebody has taken away my cheese and it would not come back now. So, to begin with, I started working hard at the school so that I may get good grades and a sound academic grounding, which will better my academic and career prospects. I also solicited a direct insight into the way economic theories worked by working for a taxation company and Charles Schwab Company. One thing that our family misfortune forced me to think about was that I often wondered whether the economic realities always worked in a random and fatal manner or whether there existed a method and reason behind them. This got me immensely interested in the discipline of economics. My work experience soon made me realize that businesses do always had a pivotal impact on the life of the people, their standard of living and the quality of life they led. This augmented my interest and encouraged me to study economics in serious and systematic way. My academic efforts at the high school made me understand that economic theories and situations do always had a rhyme and reason and they can to a great extent enable a person to understand how free markets and capitalist societies worked. Eventually, a process that started as a personal pursuit and desire to be able to make sense of the misfortune that struck our family lately metamorphosed into a deep seated aspiration to serve the larger society, by gaining a firm grounding in the discipline of economics. This strengthened my resolve and conviction to major in economics. As I have already mentioned that I was born in what is said to be a rich family, this allowed me a chance to travel to and live in various foreign destinations like America, Portugal and Venezuela. In fact this thing turned to be a benign and salubrious blessing in disguise. First and foremost, the direct opportunity to visit and live in various countries enlarged my experience and opened up my mind. This opportunity made me realize that the ability to communicate with people largely depended on the culture they belonged to and in the current times no business could thrive if it does not have the ability to navigate across cultures. This honed my cultural literacy and polished my communication skills. It endowed me with the ability and the skills to be at home in multicultural groups and teams and in fact made me realize that working in multicultural teams could indeed help one acquire varied new and useful skills. So, courtesy my international travel experiences and the chance I got to live amongst and experience varied cultures, I am proud to say that deep down I do consider myself to be a world citizen. I must say that one insight that I managed to cull out through the international experiences I had was the fact that no matter with what resources a nation is endowed with, it is eventually the people and the human resources that happen to be the true potential of any nation. Varied nations are affiliated to diverse economic systems, yet countries are mostly able to leverage the advantages they have at their disposal only if they have just the aptly skilled, educated and motivated human resources. I found that the nations that were poor and underdeveloped were not so because the lacked natural resources, but because they had not invested in their human resources and have not imparted the right education, skills and values to them. I also do feel that in the wake globalization, in the contemporary times, small and big businesses have the opportunity to assure their viability and profitability if they could benefit from the economies of scale, by expanding their procurement, manufacturing and logistics at a global scale. This insight also helped me understand as to why our successful family business was not able to compete with the large corporation. In the end, it is a known fact that people affiliate to varied disciplines and skills to be able to size up and make sense of the challenges and issues faced by them.
