Words are often dealt with cruelly when though used frequently, not observed practically. Many words are exploited for their high standards however it is not bothered to get to the spirit of the word. As in the words of Carter: “we seem to carry on a passionate love affair with a word that we scarcely pause to define” (Carter, p181). The same hypocrisy often results in huge problems. Integrity is one of those unfortunate words used ruthlessly in the United States of America but no attempt is ever made at arriving at the purpose of the frequent usage of the word. One of the reasons behind the tragedy is that often in this world, the people try to establish in others what they are devoid of themselves. One must say: “why do you preach what you do not do yourself”? When one teaches the other, the other asks for the same and the conflict begins. It means the lack of integrity brings about the downfall of nations by indulging them in warfare. Oh! My life is getting tougher day by day. Can you have a look at my course? The syllabus is not allowing me to spend my one minute for luxuries around me. The luxuries are appealing me with startling eyes. The world is inviting me for the charm, beauty and joys it has for me. I am confused which way to go. I am puzzled and something voicing from my inside; no way but to be honest with my studies. The policy orders me to meet the required studies daily. It gives me the deadline but invokes my energy to get my work done not waiting for the last minute. I should have done it much before the deadline. That is cruel for I should have some time to spend in the jocund companies of my friends. The Policy expects me to do so like one expects from the armies to be alert and to the point. For me to abide by the rules, policies, assignments and expectations, it is like a huge adventure. Let me try my best and hope for the better to come out. And for my friends, family and sports, they must listen; I have no time for them. OK. I have to achieve the distinguished character during the demonstration of the process of clinical inquiry. I want my critical questions to be comprehensive. I have an ambition; my thought process should be precise and accurate. I desire to have the ability to interpret and evaluate texts with the distinction. I long I should achieve distinction in commands over interpreting thesis and supporting evidences. In the critical evaluation of point of view, I wish ti be able to synthesize source-texts with purpose and precision and accuracy. My college intends to provide me with the abilities to face the world in future. For the purpose, a shift in policies is always imminent. For instance, Tunxis has implemented a new policy in which “grades’ have been eliminated and the “Course Ability Equivalent Scores” introduced. No doubt the method is to strengthen me with my improved knowledge, it has added to burdens over me. My instructor will no longer correct my errors, instead I have to discover and diagnose my problems myself. The responsibility of my success or failure is thus on my own shoulders now. My pleasures, how can I find time for you? My Composition Course aims at developing inside me skills of writing, my ability to read, evaluate, analyze and synthesize texts and ideas. With the standard use of English, my course is to enable me to write and revise essays with due formats. Attendance, Conduct and deadline, all I always meet with satisfaction. Essays need a high degree of concentration and learning. It is, therefore, quite a tougher job to do. To get it done to the satisfaction, my time is shortened again for my hobbies. Let me say good bye to my hobbies right now. Beg your pardon hobbies; it is to say off with you forthwith. According to Carter, “Integrity” is to fully understand the right and the wrong. When “right” is proved beyond any doubt, go for it even at the cost of one’s life and to proclaim it before the world as a mission that one is carrying out a certain act after he has distinguished the ‘right” from the “wrong”. The word has been defined here as a sense of wholeness. The man of integrity has been interpreted as a whole person, a complete person and an undivided person. He is not meant to be the person of extremes but a type of moderate person who is sure that what s/he is doing is right; the one safe from conscience-pricking (Cater, p182). I would go even further to Carter’s understanding of the word. “Integrity” is first to construe a certain thing as right or wrong after proper analysis, then to tell the whole world the fact about that particular thing and lastly to announce before all that one is going to work for the implement the right by any way and to stop the wrong even if it is by use of force. Carter says of the Americans that they “care far more about winning than about playing by the rules” (Carter, p179). It is an ugly foul play of the Americans that they want to win it at any cost. In fact they must adhere to the “American Dream” which speaks of their success depending upon their labor and hard work. The more you work hard in America, the more are the opportunities of success there. It did not mean that the More you cheat, the more you win. One of the essentials of the morals is the prerequisite of having the right to pursue or claim for something. To go for all the wishes is but the characteristic of a fool and cruel. Cruelty does not suit the people of America and Carter wants to convey the same message through his analysis of the American people. He wants the Americans to play by the rules. In fact it is the burden of work which compels one to search for short-cuts. Let take my example being the student of composition with a strictly adhering schedule. My assignments did not allow me to sit idle, go for sports and enjoy the companies of friends. Though studies are essential for life, my hobbies form no exception. I have to care for them as well. Looking at the schedule, I have to commit the injustice of setting my hobbies aside and go for the studies. But again I am thinking that what I have left behind was a thing so important for my mental and physical fitness. I have to dig out something new. I have to search for the alternative. There it comes. I have found out the solution of the problem. I can get through my course by playing a game with it. Let me be a gambler right now otherwise I will faint due to overload. That is a thing so cruel. This is paralyzing the whole of my life. I can go without failure and not even giving full attention to my studies. I will sort out what can lead me to success in the examinations. There is no need to always sit before the laptop, the blackboard or the textbook. I can search out the important points and the knowledge-gap created due to it is to cause no effect to my education. Still I am passed though I did not work fully. Students often follow the same pattern as I have decided for my Composition course. Is it binding upon them to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations stated by the administration? They are so ruthlessly approaching the students that it is forcing the students to turn away from the direction they have specified to them. They are now playing for victory rather than for rules as the ultimate goal is the victory and not the rules. Tougher schedules compel the students to search for a safer side so that they can succeed in examinations as well as get to their hobbies. The short-cut introduced by the students is often healthy in the sense that the society does not become a conglomerate of sick and fatigued people rather a community of energetic and strong people. But to my misfortunes list never ending, my institute has instrumented yet another method of examination. Henceforth, there will be no traditional letter-grades. There will be now “Course Ability Equivalent Score” method to test our abilities. The past system had a characteristic that the whole responsibility laid on the shoulders of the teachers. They would often correct the minor mistakes and get the student passed. Now the responsibility has completely fallen upon the shoulders of the student to revise and rebuild his assignment. The chances to go through the examination have been diminished very much. It means that again I am not able to pay heed to all of my businesses but to the studies only. Carter says well and it really has to be because of the enormous pressure the society of the United States of America has been carrying on. In order to get all the works done with less time, the students of America have been going through the routes as to determine they meet their both ends successfully. For instance, one of my classmates devised a strategy to go through the examination successfully. The strategy was to select the topics of importance and learn it by heart. Though he will not be able to comprehend the reading of the assignment, he learns it by heart to settle the issue once for all. It guarantees success in the examination though rare chances of success in the field. It means Carter’s conclusion about the American people is alarming. The way they are behaving is surely to lead them astray. Another example will I narrate of that of my college-mate when he recorded proxy attendance for his friend classmate. It means he had devised a strategy to overcome the problems his friend could face in the case of his absence. Though in his opinion he had won the game, he had surely violated the rules of the game. Like the authorities in Education sector has hardened it for the student to abide by the rules, similarly the policy-makers in the realms of the government have made it difficult for the state to go a normal hormonal way. They want the state to win everywhere and at whatever cost. They do not care for the rule of integrity put forth to them by their founding fathers. They are winning but with the violations of the International Law. The policy-makers have put a lot of burden on the shoulders of the state and the state is facing the shortage of time for the settlement of issues in amicable ways. It has therefore decided to address the grievances through one method; the use of force. The use of force has many times resulted in the violation of the sovereignty of states and the human rights. It is because the state, like the student, wants to win at any cost and for the victories to be gained on every forum, it has decided to play afoul game in such a technical way that the umpire does not see him. For the umpire not able to see him, there are stories which highlight the tyrannies of the enemies tough no care has been taken in the verification of the stories. What I mean is in accordance with the Carter. Carter feels the United States of America going against the requirements of integrity. The burden and a lust to win at every forum have made it devoid of the respect for law and human rights. The only thing it cares is the every time energy for playing a game of authority. Its win is a must; no mention which way it comes. The academic work on the United States of America gives it no spare time to feel free for its jocund companies, hobbies and cheers.
