Download file to see previous pages  The reason for choosing the above universities for research purposes is stated by the authors as: “The academy is a microcosm of the larger society in which we live and that America and all Western society remain provinces in which white men, and some White women, of a particular class and with particular dominant ideologies determine the nature of all of our existences” (Perry et al, 2009, p.83). The article is well researched and presents data gathered from surveys and other quantitative methods used to gauge the responses of the instructors to the questionnaire presented to them.

The second article is more to do with addressing the question of diversity in schools and the ways and means to make it possible. The article details the issue of developing and nurturing diversity and makes the point about how this can be achieved. The article starts off by describing the pre-requisites necessary for diversity and the instructor-led response to the same.

I find the article relevant and timely. Relevant because the students enter a university to get an education that goes beyond the subject matter and get an education in all senses of the word. This means molding themselves into responsible citizens of the future. Thus, the attitudes and biases shaped during the college years tend to influence decisions made at later stages in life. It is important that the right kind of education be imparted to the students.

The article is applicable to the classroom as a pointer to the attitudes of mainly white students with regard to colored people. It is relevant because diversity is an important facet of American society and culture and thus the students should like to tolerate people of other races and work with diverse ethnic groups. Though the article has been presented and researched earlier, it is timely as the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president has shown that people of color can make it to the highest post in the US.
