Animal rights activists have highlighted the practice of causing deliberate pain to animals during transport by workers in the agriculture, animal, and fisheries industry. They cited the case of Uganda where animals were dying of suffocation and were being injured while in transit. Animals are now being transported for long distances and along the way, they are made to suffer abuse from their handlers. “Many animals and birds, especially cattle, pigs, chicken, and goats, were mishandled especially when being transported to slaughterhouses across the country” (Muweesi, as quoted by The Poultry Site “Poultry News”).

Many animals are transported under overcrowded conditions. They are also made to endure stress and inadequate ventilation while being transported. As a result, “thousands die every year in transport-related accidents” (Veg for Life “Animals”). Our legislation is inadequate to protect the welfare of animals because farm animals are legally allowed to be confined in trucks for up to 36 hours without food and water while also being exposed to all sorts of weather conditions. Animals also become sick or injured during transit and are usually immediately dragged to slaughter upon arrival in the slaughterhouses. Sometimes they are abandoned and left to suffer.

Downer animals (animals that are severely injured and can barely walk) are as good as dead. An instance of two downer pigs caught on video has fueled the ire of many animal rights activists. The video showed two mistreated pigs with one being dragged out by the ear, and the other left all night outside on bare concrete. Both animals were found dead the following day (Eyes on Animals “News”).

Research studies have revealed that the transport of chickens is an extremely stressful episode for the birds.  “A number of studies have discovered high levels of stress hormones in the blood of chickens during transport” (Compassion over Killing “Chicken Industry”).   ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Animals

...Animals We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. Trangenic Animals

...Introduction While animal breeding and the crossing of different breeds of the same species have had a considerable history as long as that of human agriculture, the intermixing of different species has often generated fear or anxiety, if not revulsion. These responses have been captured in the form of the hybrid monster creatures of mythology. The chimera of Greek mythology; part lion, part goat, part dragon, was a creature that was eventually slain by the hero Bellerophon. This had its counterpart in the makara of Hindu myth, with the body of a crocodile and the tail of a fish, also reflected in the Western astrological sign of Capricorn. Chimeras today are no longer mythical nor part of science fiction; modern-day biology through...

Academic Voice

...Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning. Maya Angelou (Poet) Introduction The person who is writing academic papers, and what that person chooses to write about, as well as how they choose to write, will change them as well as others. Academia has recently recognized that in order for its institutions to change it is necessary to encourage students to draw more on their own "voice" within their writing so as to facilitate more inclusive and broader perspectives (Belenky, 1997). Hence, it is critical that each student's "academic voice" come across in their writings. Voice can be defined as the way in which an argument is presented, supported...
