It is evident that the Supreme Court ruling changed the social structure of the country. The documentary also recounts the fight to stop decade of discrimination and segregation in public schools across the American cities.
The most important thing I learnt from the movie is the action taken by the NAACP to force the government to implement the recommendations of the court decision (Muslimah, n. p). This helps in understanding the achievements of the minority groups in fighting for the social achievements enjoyed today. The other most important thing is the admission of the first Black students to attend schools with other mixed races without rampant cases of discrimination. For instance, Central High School experienced mass action after the administration refused to admit the minorities in the school (Muslimah, n. p).
The most interesting I learnt from the movie is the chronological depiction of the events of the early ’57 to the late ’62. The audience is able to follow the happenings and challenges faced by the civil rights activists as they tried to implement the education recommendations (Muslimah, n. p). Another important thing that I learnt is the defiant nature of the minority activists as they forced their children to attend mixed race schools. This encouraged the intervention of the political leaders to step in to allow equal learning opportunities among the races. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
