Without understanding the purpose of Social media, the tool would do little to help in the process of emergency management. In general, the social media represents a networking platform that enables communication and interaction using internet connections. In the categorization of social media, a number of applications come up. The blogs and social networks allow people to develop their individual pages based on their profiles while posting online journals on social, economic, and political updates.
Such an example is the Huffington post. Bookmarking sites are websites that enable people to share, classify, search and store links that are of relevance to them. Collaborative projects represent the databases of communities that are created based on the contents of the users. Such projects include the Wikipedia. On the other hand, online communities, referred to as content communities, enable people to share various videos, audio and photos. The YouTube fits a perfect example of a content community.
Social reviews are websites for people to share, search and rate certain information based on personal interest, relevance and inclination, like the Google places (Latonero & Shklovski, 2011). The rise of social media overcomes the restrictions and geographical barriers that hindered the performance of traditional forms of media. Social media has the completeness that enables people to access and share contributions in a persistent state. Besides, the content on social media is highly visible, and allows other people to know the activities of the surrounding environment.
In addition to clarity, social media enhances connectivity through the availability of internet. In general, the collective nature of this form of communication uses common platforms to connect people, hence fostering the development of online communities as well as promoting the segmentation of people based on the similarities
