Should English be the official language in the United s? For a while now, United s have not had an official language. This is despite English being widely spoken in the United States. Thus, English should be made an official language in the United States. Majority of US residents speak only English in their homes (Miller 2). Thus, the need for official language will act as a means for a clear communication all over the United States. Having an official language aids in reducing the changing racial demographics among the residents in a country.
Therefore, English should be made the official language of United States. Moreover, if English is made a common language, there will be an established commonality among the US residents. This will be capable of creating a web of connections that holds and unites the people together. Language is a form of national identity that serves to be preserved and protected. Thus, the commonality of language could also be used to override the existing racial considerations in the area. Instituting English as a national language would not have effects on what people spoke on daily lives.
It only applies when individuals are conducting official duties and they can be punished for conducting official matters in any other language other than English (Liu and Sokhey 2). This means that individuals can continue to converse in their preferred language in their personal settings, but only hold onto English for official or public speaking. In contrast, there is the issue of that if English was a unifying factor as many claim, then the native English speakers who spurred the American Revolution could not have done that if it were the case.
This is regarding that English language has been the language of communication in America for the longest time now. Moreover, instituting language as the official language would act as a disadvantage for the no-English speakers in the US including the international students. Considering that conducting any official language in any other language other than English could be punished, and then these individuals would have to stay out of public or official matters for a while before they learn how to communicate in English.
In addition, making English an official language could lead to the banning of other languages learned in schools including German or French. The reason is that there would be no use of such languages other than if an individual is willing to work in other foreign countries. All in all, English should be made an official language to continue preserving the diverse nature of the United States. People in the United States and the federal government value diversity. Despite this, they should preserve English as their common language to come up with a common ground for the diverse cultures in the region (Chyna, Alise and Joseph 1).
This would require all the immigrants into the country to learn the English language. Making English an official language would save the United States a lot of money that comes about from the conducting business in more than one official language. Moreover, the United States would conform to various institutions like the US army who conduct their operations in English. In conclusion, English should be made the official language of the United States. Such is because it will create room for unifying the nation and support social and economic development in the country.
Critics’ argument for lack of support of other languages and non-English speakers is weak since the language is not denying individuals a social welfare at their village, community and houses, but creating an effective platform for communication among all persons. Hence, English will ensure that United States becomes a diverse nation, which is not biased to local languages of the country. Works Cited Chyna, T., et al.
