MEMORANDUM ON ETHICAL CONCEPT Executive summary In the running of the company, ethical concepts should be put in practice for the welfare of the workers and public image. According to the Wal-Marts National Vice President for Benefits, M. Susan Chambers wants some of the proposal to be enforced by junior managers from south, north and central Florida. The decision, of considering this proposal, may have a tremendous impact on the future productivity of the company. Violation of the ethical principle may affirm that it behave toward others as if they were worth less than as compared to how we take ourselves to be. MEMORANDUM To: M. Susan Chambers, Vice President wall-mart benefits From: Wal-Mart Benefits Manager, South Florida Date: 29-January-2015 Subject: my stand on enforcing your request from your previous memorandum I understand that our company is working out to reduce some of the expenses through the provision of the benefits to the workers. I am compelled to express concern that I am against several sensitive issues that you wish me in my position to enforce in reference to your memo. It will be deplorable to inform you that I am not going to implement your proposals. The basis as to why I am against the endorsement of your suggestions in my position as Wal-Mart Benefits Manager, South Florida is because of the action of this company will be considered as Altruism towards the workers. According to my profession, in this position I may look as being unethical. Despite my colleagues take to your memo, my decision of the firm. Ethical concept involves relating moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these. I would like to cite some of the universal moral concepts that should be always considered and should never be breached. There is Absolutism, Cognitive dissonance and Reciprocity among others. Absolutist systems do not offer any omission to particular ethical principles. The philosopher Emmanuel Kant affirmed that the moral act was one that the doer was willing to have an opinion on a standard policy. One rule of absolutism shows that human beings cannot be harmed for any objective, regardless of how otherwise worthwhile. Absolutism has the benefit of making rigid ethical calls appear easy and the disadvantage of making the debate impossible. One looks like the absolutism reflecting today in the controversies over war, torture, abortion, cloning, and capital punishment (Hardin, 1976). Cognitive dissonance is an ethical concept that should be put into consideration. It take place when there is a difference between what an individual believes, knows and values, and convincing information that calls these into question. The discrepancy may lead to psychological discomfort, as well as mind to adjust to reduce the disparity. In ethics, cognitive dissonance is vital in its capability to change values, such as when a trendy celebrity embraces the behavior that his or her admirers are against it. Their dissonance will often consequently result to change in their attitudes toward the behavior. Disagreement also leads to rationalizations of unethical conduct, as when the appeal and potential benefits of a large amount of money make immoral actions to acquire it seem less objectionable than if they were applied to smaller quantities (Hardin, 1976).. The final ethical concept that we will be going against is Reciprocity. It is a straightforward way of judging conduct influencing others through putting oneself in the position of those influenced. Reciprocity should always be present in any ethical analysis, but it is oftenly too simple to be helpful in composite moral conditions with several competing interests. As a Wal-Mart Benefits Manager, I will apply this moral concept for the benefit of the workers (McCullough, 2006) For that reason, the company will be considered as breaching of professional ethics as stated in the labor laws. For this reason, the company may be found guilty and thought it unlawful, leading it to be sued by the labor union. Breaching of ethical principle can result in the license being suspended or revoked. In some cases, legal fines or other consequences might also apply. The unhealthy workers who you expect me to discourage them from working because of the medical state will get enraged with that decision, and this may lead them to demonstrating in the streets. It will attract media’s attention hence increasing the chances of the running the company’s reputation to the public (Montrose, 1958). Also discouraging them from working will lead to losing of the experienced workers who had adequate knowledge of their role at work. On the other hand, your take, of hiring part-time workers so as to reduce the operation cost, may lead to the slow functioning of the company. It is because part-time workers are not reliable this since they will not have confidence in securing their job. Hence in the process they will seek other places for employment in the process leaving our company in the dilemma. Your last proposal, of reducing the enrollment of the spouses, may lead to conflict. It will not make any sense not to enroll the spouse consider a circumstance by which we enroll non-spouse workers still they will start the intimate relationship and after while they will become the spouse to each other. What should the company do in a circumstance? Should we suck them because they are in the relationship? If we will suck them, what of the others who were their best friends at work, don’t you think they will down their tools? They will have bitterness because their right, of interacting with their colleagues, is being defiled. Finally, those who will feel that their rights have been defiled they may not fight back but seek employment in other places where they will be treated fairly. And most probably they may secure job in the companies of your competitors. It will make our company performance to go down given that those who have left company had more experience in the job. Also, they have confidential information of the company performance which they will share with our business rivals.
