The Making of the Modern Middle East Beneficiaries: Post-WW I East The major beneficiaries were the Great Powers (British and French) that got mandated by league of nation to take the territories after peaceful treaty of 1920 that forced Ottoman to sign it unconditionally surrendering. “The peace treaty served the great powers well but created a great deal of resentment amongst the Arabs (Fromkin, 1991).” These beneficiaries fueled the independency of the States of Arabs East following the defeat of Ottoman Empire.

The peaceful treaty (1920) Great Powers to expand their spheres of influence and grasp of the Middle East. However, they were disillusioned by the increased insecurity and instability of these states (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Irag) as Irag revolted against British. Consequences: Created Arab States The states became disillusioned as Great Powers reneged on the earlier promises of creating independent states. “The political units created after WWI by imperial powers were not territories that were necessarily used to be governed as a single units (Walker, 2003; Kelidar 1993).

” The treaty divided the Middle East into two; British and French mandated territories. There was no independence for the created states and had to be ruled by French and British while they had to start from scratch. Their own people and rulers rejected the states that had no structured political bases despite being portioned into political units. Discontents escalated leading to increased instability and insecurity within these States that saw Irag revolution against the British. The created states face difficulty in to design a framework that can amicably solve domestic political wrangles (Kelidar, 1993, p. 315).
