Extract of sample "Smoking in Public Places Should be Banned"

It is now a universally accepted fact that Smoking is Injurious to Health. However, the accumulating evidence against secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is just as alarming. ETS refers to the smoke emanating from cigarettes, and that exhaled by smokers. Smoking in public places should be banned because secondhand smoke causes heart diseases, contains carcinogens and is particularly injurious to children. The first reason to ban smoking in public places is that ETS causes heart disease.

The risk of heart disease increases by 25-30% in the case of non-smokers who are exposed to ETS. The Surgeon General’s Report of 2006 categorically states that “breathing secondhand smoke for even a short time can have immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and interferes with the normal functioning of the heart, blood, and vascular systems in ways that increase the risk of a heart attack” (“The Health Consequences”).The second reason to ban smoking in public places is that ETS contains known carcinogens.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists ETS as a Group A carcinogen which causes about 3,000 deaths from lung cancer among non-smokers in the USA and contains seventy toxic, cancer-causing chemicals. (“Health Effects of Exposure”).
