Unit: Public Life and Ministry of Jesus Year 9 Unit Length: 10 weeks duration with three 50-minute periods per week. (25 hours) Rationale Many Christians go on pilgrimage each year to witness the path that Jesus Christ travelled. There is one source however, that allows us a closer look into the life of Christ and journey with him in his public life and ministry. And that is the Holy Bible, specifically the four gospels in the New Testament. Through the study of his earthly ministry, we are able to meet the “real” Jesus. To understand the events that took place, it is imperative to contextualize the setting of the stories from the gospel. This unit starts off with an introduction of the historical events in the Jewish nation during Jesus’ time. The ministry of Christ contains a rich data of revelations and thus, it is worthwhile to explain the messages at the present context as well. This approach of contextualizing the teachings of Jesus during his time and at the present time is adopted throughout the duration of the unit in analysing the text. Studying the life of Christ enriches our Christian experience where we learn what God offers to us and what He requires of us. Slowly, the pattern and promise of salvation is revealed to the students. The challenge is to translate these insights into their daily lives and mundane experiences. Thus, the ultimate goal of this unit is to bring the students to an awareness of where they are in their lives according to the teachings of Jesus, and how they can work towards achieving better Christian lives. Aim There are various skills that the students will develop from successfully completing this course. The students are trained to work in groups, present before the class, and think creatively and analytically about the passages that they read. They are also given ample opportunities to express themselves both verbally and in written form. The activities are especially designed to nurture the spiritual development of the students. Journal writing encourages time for reflection and a venue for expression of ideas. By understanding, appreciating and imbibing the life and teachings of Christ, the students become more Christ-like in their ways and manners of dealing with themselves and others. Towards the end of the course, the students are expected to answer the question: What can I do to best respond to the mission God has set for me?
