Interview #2 Needs and struggles Physical needs Vincent feels satisfied with his physical needs since he has a part-time job that enables him put food on his table, a roof over his head and clothes on his back. Vincent is comfortable with his physical needs because he has insurance that enables him to get proper treatment when sick. He appreciates the fact that his basic survival needs are met hence hopes that he will be able to complete his studies and get a permanent job soon. Emotional and psychosocial needs Vincent is comfortable around his family members but felt depressed and isolated from the classmates in school before he joined college. These feelings of isolation have made him lack trust among his family members and other prospective friends hence making him more depressed. Bullying in school worsened the situation as it made him develop anger issues and avoided everyone because he felt that they could not help him change his attitude. Spiritual needs Vincent blamed all his sufferings on external factors such as karma, fate, and God. He felt that if God cared about him, he would let him suffer but protect him from all the people that were bullying and isolating him in school. Vincent believed that those who suffered were the ones being punished by God, and it was a form of fate and karma. Other issues encountered The other issue that Vincent faced during his suffering period was language barrier because he had moved from Australia to Taiwan. He had financial issues because transitioning to a different country needed more money to settle and buy household materials. He was interrupted at work because he was still working on getting his work permit in Taiwan and found it difficult to communicate with the colleagues because of the language barrier. Vincent’s family role changed since he was now the breadwinner of the family since his parents had retired. Caregiver’s support Vincent did not have any caregivers to help him overcome his suffering stage and regretted that fact. The caring words and actions that were meaning to him were the encouraging words from his classmates whom he cherished and hoped that their simple interactions would develop into true friendship even if it turned out differently. Vincent treasured friendship and family relationships since he felt needed and appreciated by the few individuals that accepted to interact with him in the new country. Support missing from caregivers Vincent needed support from caregivers when he felt isolated and depressed, who would have encouraged him to be positive about life and to feel appreciated. What was missing from his loved ones was more concern for his welfare and encouragement. Vincent described how he wished that caregivers would call and text him regularly to find out how he was doing and how his classmates were treating him in school. He explained how he longed for his family members to be more involved in his life by encouraging him to go to church so that he could be strong in faith. Sense of hope What gives Vincent a sense of hope when he is in pain is that God cares for him and cannot let him be tempted beyond his abilities. He is encouraged by Miller and Stephen when he states that with every temptation and pain God will provide a way to escape so that humans can endure it (30-32). Vincent has ever lost a sense of hope. What triggered it was when he was bullied in school and when he felt isolated and depressed to an extent that he stopped trusting people. Lessons What Vincent learnt through this suffering is that his negative attitude towards life and people influenced his condition. A positive attitude towards life would have enabled him to find friends and caregivers who would have made him feel treasured and accepted in the community. Personal reflection The interview The interview went well since the interviewee was willing to open up about what he was going through in life. It was easier conducting the interview this time because Vincent considered me a friend. Communication skills I have maintained my good communication skills since the last interview, and I feel that the interviewee understood my questions since he answered all without issues of language barrier. Lessons about suffering I have learnt from the interviews that suffering is real and different people express their emotions differently. Vincent expressed his emotions by isolating and depressing himself while others could display this by engaging in harmful behaviors such as excessive drinking or smoking to forget their problems. I have learnt that individuals who are suffering need caregivers and loved ones who can encourage and care for them by motivating them to think positively about life and surround themselves with friends that treasure and appreciate their character. Relationship I observed that the interviewer regards me as one of his close friends since he was willing to share his suffering freely with me and felt that he could count on me during his difficult moments in life. Vincent displayed his friendship by protecting me when I was in Taiwan when someone was trying to pick a fight with me and his concern for my welfare when he ensured that I had a comfortable stay during my visit. Hope It is effective to foster a sense of hope during suffering because it enables individuals to think positively about life, trusting that their situation is not permanent. Hope in God strengthens the faith of the suffering hence making them choose the right paths to follow other than engaging in negative behaviors such as excessive drinking and smoking of illegal drugs. Caring behaviors The caring behaviors that I learnt from the interviews that I hope to remember for the future are that everybody deserves to be treasured, respected and treated well because all individuals have value and are wonderfully created by God. Caring for others enables them to reciprocate the same during our times of need since everyone suffers at some point in life and would need help. Lessons about myself The interviews have enabled me to learn that I am empathetic since I put myself in the shoes of others and try to understand what they are going through in life, hence using that information to try and help the suffering. I have learned that I am lucky because I have a family and friends that are always there for me during my periods of suffering and who encourage me not to give up during difficult situations. Interviewing others has made me learn that I am strong enough to bear suffering and willing to help other individuals who are going through difficult moments in life.
