Theorists Definitions of Religion - Assignment Example

Hick and Eliade both believe that a force exists beyond the natural, in which people encounter experiences and have faith. Diversity in religion however establishes differences in the theorists’ meanings of religion. Hick’s definition of religion identifies the existence of different deities, based on cultural diversity, which people from different cultures believe in and encounter. People’s encounter with the supernatural is however different, based on religions and culture. Eliade’s understanding of religion however identifies a sacred entity to which people subscribe.

According to the theorist, different religions may exist but they all trace their belief to a single sacred entity. Eliade’s definition of religion, unlike that of Hick, also includes time and space aspects (Nye 111- 113). According to Eliade, the sacred exists “beyond space and time” but people can experience it in their ordinary lives (Nye 113).
