It seems most important for Dali was his career. As we read in Dali’s Diary of a Genius all his everyday life was dependent on his creativity and so was his whole life. He sees himself as a genius who needs to be developed almost at any cost (Dali, 2007). That’s typical for an artist to be egocentric and focused on his personality. But by focusing on one side of life, you sacrifice others. Dali often was blamed by his quondam friends for his moral qualities turned worse. Luis Bunuel – a famous filmmaker who was one of Dali’s closest friends in youth, - in his book My Last Sigh compares a young artist Salvador he once knew to an iconic figure Dali, and says adult Dali cared too much about money (Bunuel, 2013). I think it’s a natural cause of a choice Dali made, though it’s not close to me.

For a public person, it’s harder to build a family because your family also becomes public, so most public persons sacrifice their family for their careers. Dali combined his private life and even subdued his family life with his career. In his Diary of a Genius Dali speaks about his wife Gala as his greatest muse (Dali, 2007). Though this view on a family relationship doesn’t seem suitable to me, it’s a good way for a public person to have a family while having their career.

Many people that have been raised in an unhappy or single-parent family are failed to build a standard family as adults. Dali had a hard relationship with his father and other relatives. Firstly, his brother died as a child and Salvador blamed his parents to see the reflection of their dead child in Salvador (Dali, 2007). He argued also with his father after his mother’s death because of Salvador’s rebellious behavior and on religious grounds. That ended with a complete breakup. Another reason for Dali to not build a standard family was, of course, his choice not to be ordinary.

The religion which a person chose to follow tells a lot about this person’s worldview. Though Spain is known to be a catholic country, Dali wasn’t catholic and it was a public position. He was interested in the nuclear explosion as much as in meeting with Pope (“Dali and Religion”, 2008). I think it’s natural for artists to seek answers and not stand on something, except aesthetic views. In Dali’s paintings, there’re many religious motives, but also scientific motives which confirm his seeking nature. I don’t consider myself a religious person, but I believe in God and I’m interested in the shapes God can take for different confessions. Modern science progress is fascinating too and I don’t think we need to pass up one for another.

One can consider Dali a role model because he managed to express himself, and also make money from it. In conclusion, I’d like to mention that Dali positioned himself as an extraordinary person. He thought his behavior can be appropriate only for him, but for many artists after Dali became a role model. So I think Dali is a role model, but not sure if a good one. ...Download file to see next pages Read More
