Extract of sample "What Is the Specific Role of Neurotransmitters in the Brain"

Neurotransmitters are the substances which the brain uses for sending its commands and assist in the regulation of the activities monitored by the brain. The brain consists of two types of neurotransmitters. These include the transmitters which are required for increasing a certain activity and these neurotransmitters provide an end result of excitation and hence are known as excitatory neurotransmitters. These are used by the brain for increasing activities in organs of the body. On the other hand, there is another class of neurotransmitters that are involved in the decreasing of the activities and as they provide an end result of inhibition they are known as neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters can hence be considered as messengers of the brain for its orders.Neurotransmitters are very essential for the regulation of all bodily activities. A correct balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters is also essential. The importance of neurotransmitters can be seen from the fact that if there is some lesion that leads to decreased excitatory receptors it can lead to decreased activity of the brain. The end result is depression and other such disorders.
