Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 53, 727–734. The authors of the article conducts a research in which they employ intervention measures to a certain area within sexual knowledge so as to determine the impact of such knowledge improvement on the decision making capacity among moderate intellectually disabled adults, in relation to sexual issues. The intervention involved a sex education program that was individually tailored in order to increase the attention given to each student. The author aims at demonstrating that just like other ‘normal’ people, intellectually disabled individuals could develop the capacity to make decisions concerning their sexuality if they are exposed to the right kind of sexual educational approaches. The authors of the article engage in a general study of intellectually disabled individuals within Ireland in order to come up with a rich source of information concerning such individuals that would dissect through the social construct of such individuals. The authors noted that the lifestyle and health profiles of the sample population did not have the aspect of gender difference, thus, such individuals failed to consider themselves under any of the two genders. It was also clear that the decision making process was not related to the health behavior of such individuals. The article is important in determining the patterns of decision making among individuals with intellectual disability in order to deduce how such patterns affect their sexuality. The aim of the article is to apply the Assessment of Sexual Knowledge (ASK) tool in the assessment of knowledge among intellectually disabled adults. The results of the study within the article indicate low levels of knowledge of issues concerning sexuality, among individuals with intellectual disability, especially in areas concerning sexual health, sexually transmitted infections, legal issues, safe sex, and contraception. This article will be essential in determining the knowledge of the intellectually disabled as related to other variables of the research. Gougeon, N. A. (2009). Sexuality education for students with intellectual disabilities a critical pedagogical approach: outing the ignored curriculum. Sex Education, 9, 277–291. The author of this article reviews the level of education that intellectually disabled individuals are exposed to in sexual education. It is evident from the article that this population is exposed to inadequate sexual education, with the reduction in the outside classroom interactions, referred to by the author as “ignored curriculum”. This article will be important in the recommendation of educational measures that would enhance sexuality knowledge among intellectually disabled individuals, as the author suggests application of a pedagogical approach in the effective education of intellectually disabled individuals. The article presents an assessment of the experiences, sexual knowledge, and aspirations of intellectually disabled people through focus groups, with a further review of their experienced barriers in achieving sexual autonomy. It is evident from the article that as much as there are various positive changes in terms of how people view sexual autonomy among the intellectually disabled, various cultural and social barriers still affect sexual expression. The article will be effective in the study in the review of the various aspects that hinder sexual autonomy among the intellectually disabled in order to suggest a framework that would consider addressing such barriers. The authors review the knowledge, attitudes, concerns and opinions among parents of children with intellectual disability, with regards to the children’s sexuality. In the study conducted by the authors, it was clear that the patents of such students had developed a poor attitude towards the sexuality of the children because of lack of education on any form of sexual development. The article will be important in the development of intervention measures under the education programs that would promote the sexual knowledge and attitudes of caregivers. Katz, G., & Lazcano-Ponce, E. (2008). Sexuality in subjects with intellectual disability: an educational intervention proposal for parents and counsellors in developing countries. Salud Publications Mexico, 50, 239–254. The article reviews the knowledge gaps within the intellectual disability studies, especially within the areas of legislation, intervention, and service utilization. The article will be essential in review of suggestions that would facilitate development of sexual education among individuals with intellectual disabilities. The article goes beyond such educational provisions and suggests ways through which the social integration of the intellectually disabled individuals can be enhanced in light of promoting their sexual autonomy. The author of this article focused on the various opportunities and barriers that young intellectually disabled individuals face in showing various sexual expressions including bisexuality and homosexuality. The author was keen to note the importance of the behaviors and attitudes directed towards such intellectually disabled young persons in making such sexual expressions. The article is important in the research’s focus on the scope of sexual education when dealing with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Murphy, G. H., & O’Callaghan, A. (2004). Capacity of adults with intellectual disabilities to consent to sexual relationships. Psychological Medicine, 34, 1347–1357. The article reviews the capacity of individuals with intellectual disabilities in terms of consenting to sexual interactions. The authors recognize the thin line that lies between the need for empowering such individuals to demand their rights to sex, and need to protect them from any form of sexual abuse. The article will be vital in the research process in the determination of the measures of capacity among individuals with intellectual disability, in relation to agreeing to sexual relationships.
