Adjustment: Music Therapy Center Affiliation 0 Introduction In the contemporary world, people are facing various challenges associated with physical, psychological, and social needs among other related need. Different center exist to handle related problems among individuals, usually at a cost. This paper entails designing a center or space that could help client achieve better adjustment, physically, psychologically, and socially. The center to be designed in this regard is a center for music therapy. Music therapy would be the consolidated program to be offered for ever individual who comes in. The music therapy program would entail the use of interventions to help client achieve the necessary adjustments within therapeutic relationships through professionals who have fully undergone approved music therapy programs. Music therapy is typically an allied health program and an expressive therapy (Mossler, Chen, & Heldal, 2011). It consists of processes in which the music therapists use music alongside its facets to assist clients in improving their physical, psychological, social, and mental health. The music facets applied in this regard are typically physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and aesthetic. The program has been considered helpful in adjusting/improving the client’s health in various domains like motor skills, cognitive functioning, emotional development, quality of life, and social skills (Mossler, Chen, & Heldal, 2011). All these adjustments are achieved through music experiences like singling, improvising, listening, discussing, and moving to the music. Studies have depicted that music therapy can incorporate many other areas like clinical therapy, biomusicology, psychotherapy, musical acoustics, sensory integration, and aesthetic of music among others. 2.0 Vision Statement The center for music therapy is designed with both short-terms and long-term visions. The short term vision will assist in accomplishing and short-term goals and objective while the long-term vision will assist in executing the long-term goals and objectives. The visions are as follow: 2.1 Short-term vision (0-12 months) : To empower clients with the ability to fight common psychological, mental, physical, and social problems that they face on daily basis. 2.2 Long-term vision (1-5 years) : To provide a consolidated music therapy program that can accommodate any person who finds it fit and include music therapy for other health problems like residual schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. 3.0 Structure of the Music Therapy Program Center The Music Therapy Center will be based on various elements apart from the music as the core program. The center will be basically a large hall that can accommodate a meaningful number of clients up to 100 clients at a time. This will allow the socializing of clients as one of the major objectives of the program. Some of the clients’ needs would have to be customized to fit different clients. This implies that private rooms would be present to allow specialized music therapies. The center would be open for a maximum of six day a week, excluding important holidays, from Monday to Saturday. Clients would be commuting from their respective homes. It will allow clients referred to the program by health professionals and those who are free from referrals. 4.0 Location The music therapy center will be located close to or within a major hospital/healthcare. This location would be important because of referral cases. It will allow for easy locating by clients who would be referred to music therapy programs by their healthcare providers. Such a hospital has to be centrally located in a major city in Switzerland like Bern. 5.0 Adjustment Techniques and Rational for the Treatments The adjustments to be initiated using the music therapy program would be based various theoretical frameworks like psychodynamics, humanistic, and behavioral approaches. Different techniques are suitable for people of different age groups, but they some could be generally used for almost all clients irrespective of their ages, as long as they have a common need. The key areas requiring adjustments and that would be tackled by the program include physical/biological, psychological, and social needs/problems (Thomas, 1999). 5.1 Biological Needs/Disorders Some of the major biological problems among clients to be targeted by the program include mainly heart diseases, brain functionality enhancement, and body fitness. In the short-run, only physical health and body fitness would be the main vision of the program. Clients during the first year of opening the center would only include those wishing to improve the physical body health. Other complex biological disorders like heart diseases would be covered after the first year after the center is fully established with full capacity to handle heart diseases and complex physical needs like promoting the recovery of defected/inhered limps among other physical/biological problem. Enhancing brain functionality among clients especially young people would be part of the biological solutions offered to clients through the music therapy program. Music therapy for heart diseases would be based on the fact that music is capable of reducing respiratory rate, hear rate, and blood pressure. This aspect would help clients suffering with heart-related disorder like coronary heart disease (Bradt & Dileo, 2009). Body fitness as a major need by many people would be achieved through the physical movements of the human body as clients dance to the music tunes. The genre of music would be important in this case. The best genre would be the ones requiring as much body movement as possible. In this case, it would generate a form of physical exercise, but within a joyful mood. The music would tend to block off the exhausting moment of clients since they would be enjoying the music as their bodies undergo pressure from the physical exercises (Thomas, 1999). 5.2 Social Needs Social needs will mainly consist of neurological disorders including stroke, dementia, and amnesia, aphasia. All these health problems will be covered in the long-run as part of the accomplishment of the long-term vision of the music therapy center/program, which is set to be between one year and five years. The short-run period under this category would cover simple social issues like depression. Other extended effects of depression like stroke would be covered after the center has been fully established (Thomas, 1999). The neurological disorders would be treated based on the possible symptoms, which mostly include social and psychosocial problems like depression, aphasia, stroke, and speech problems among other biological/mental/physical problems faced clients. The nature of music to affect certain brain portions would be applied to handle stroke. In this regard, the music would have the capacity of affecting clients’ emotions and their social interactions making it effective as a therapy for stroke (Nayak, 2000). Typically, music has been found to be useful in promoting motor skills recovery. The music therapy program would also be used to treat various types of dementia. These disorders are common depicted in people’s social behaviors (Nayak, 2000). The music would contribute to enhanced interaction and conversation among other social skills. Amnesia is another major social problem, whose symptoms could be solved using various musical interactions especially playing and listening. The therapy would help clients alleviate most of the symptoms. Lastly, aphasia as a social problem would be solved using melodic intonation (MIT). In this regard, clients with speech problems would undergo a multi-stage treatment. They would commit words as well as speech rhythms to their memories by incorporating these word and speed into songs. Generally, the music therapy program would contribute greatly in solving various social problems. 5.3 Psychological Problems The psychological problems to be solved using the music therapy program would mainly include schizophrenia and depression. The music therapy program would be used on schizophrenic clients mainly to ameliorate most of the associated symptoms. The therapy would help in minimizing adverse symptoms like speech issues, flatness affect, and anhedonia. Clients would gain better adjustments in this regard like improved conversation abilities, reduced social isolations, as well as increased interests in external events (Tang, Yao, & Zheng, 1994). Similarly, depressed clients would gain positive outcomes owing to the use of the music therapy program. Many people with depression generally seem to accept music therapy (Maratos, Gold, Wang, & Crawford, 2008). The therapy would be used to improve their mood and their ability to express their emotions, especially whenever listening to sad music. 6.0 Conclusion Music therapy program has been found to be effective in treating various problems that range from social, psychological, to biological disorders/disease. The rationale for each treatment provided through the therapy is basically the same, but there are significant differences. While music would be the basic requirement, other facilities would be required to make the center for music therapy completely successful. Other than the facilities, skills would be another key necessity, since various music therapists would be specialized in handling different client problems respectively. The center may not have the capacity to incorporate all the required skills and facilities among other key resources immediately after being established. This aspect is the basis for having both the short-term and long-term visions and objectives. Besides, the center would be expanded as more clients with varying and more complex needs would approach the center for the music therapy provided. The center will receive increased number of referred clients from various health centers and non-referred clients with time.
