Teacher Rhetorical Analysis of a place, my place being The Home Tools of rhetorical analysis rely on pathos, logos and ethos appeals. Pathos or pathetic appeal seeks to evoke emotion from the audience to make the writing or speech more attractive or to gain approval from the audience. Logos or logical appeal on the other hand appeals to the audience sense of reason by making a convincing argument about a topic being discussed. Ethos or ethical appeal on the other hand relies on the credibility, qualification or stature of the speaker or writer to convince the audience about the position taken by the speaker or the writer. Doing a rhetorical analysis of a place called “home” may be heavy on pathos because of the emotion and memories created in the home of which all of the audience can relate because everyone has a home only that their version of it may vary. The other rhetorical tools may just be a support such as the logos or logical appeal because home is not the place where one always uses his or her reason. Ethos or the use of credential or qualification to make an appeal or convince an audience may not help much because one does not need a superb credential to make a case about home. Home is not just a place of abode where we live, rest, play and stay. It is more than a structure with a roof and walls that serves a shelter. Home has an emotional connotation to it. We call home a home and not just a house because we see beyond the brick and mortar that it is made of. When we say home, the things that gets into our head is not the building or structure, but the shared memories, the people we love and comfortable with, the things that we love doing and sorts of things that makes us happy. It is a place that we always wanted to be. That is why when we have a bad day or in a horrible situation and wanting to seek refuge or relief, we say, I just want to go home. Meaning, this place or situation is so bad that I want to seek refuge to my comfort zone which is my home. Home does not always mean the place we live or stay. As previously said, home does not only connote structure. That is why even if we are staying in a nice place, it still could not be called a home but rather just a place to stay because it did not have the emotional connotation of a home. To cite an example, we can use the dorm we students use to stay in college. Sure the place is an acceptable living quarter and could even be fun with dorm mates and friends to hang out and do crazy things with but it is still cannot be called home. It is devoid of the memory that connotes emotion such as a place where one blew his or her first birthday cake, when we used to piss on our beds, when we are loved scolded by our parents, when we made quarrel over our siblings over silly things, where we were supported by parents and family members during the difficult times and other memories that cannot be replaced by another nice place. Home is a place where we will always go back no matter how far we have been. Even if we grow old and have accomplished so much, we will always go back to the place we called home and rekindle fond memories. Home cannot be replaced by another building or structure no matter how nice it is but only by another home where there is love, support, understanding and harmony. It could happen when one starts to create his or her own family with the person he or she love. Eventually, they become a family and settle in a place they will call home. The old home is still a home but it is now added with a new home where the element of love, support and fond memories exist. Eventually they will have children whom both parents will love, take care of and support and these children will also begin calling their place a “home”. They too will go to universities perhaps in far away places and will be staying in nice dormitories. But again, such dormitory is only a place to stay while in college. It may be fun staying there but again, it could not replace home. Ideally, everyone must have a place they will fondly remember as home so that when things get bad to them, they can get back to its memories and become calm again. Or worst, they can even physically go back to it or take a vacation to relax and clear their head and become reasonable again. Often, people give in to stress and do unthinkable things when they are under duress because they often forget the idea of home or their sense of home is weak. Thus, people must strive to make their concept of home stronger because it does not only serve as a shelter, but also a place where one can relieve themselves of stress by going back to the place that reminds them of good memory which is called home. Home is universal to human beings. One does not need to be rich or have grand house to call it a home. As long as love, support, understanding and harmony exists, a place can become home and a place where one will always go back to rekindle good memories. A grand place without love, understanding, support and harmony is just a house or mansion where one can stay and easily forget. It can even be a place of misery especially when people in it are always fighting or having misunderstanding. Again, home is not a structure or building but a place where one wanted to be. There are also other versions of home that is apart from the place where our family and love ones stay. Home can be a country where one came from, it can be the school where we studied, the clubs that we belonged, the company that we are with. This supports the idea that home is not really just a place or structure. For as long as there is an emotional connotation attached to a place, group of people where an individual feels loved and comfortable and its idea makes the individual feel good to the point that he or she misses it, home exists. Again, it is not merely confined to a place where we stay with our love ones but also the people, institutions, organizations and group of people we belong where it invokes a high degree of emotion where we can be with ourselves and being accepted and loved as we are. Ultimately, the concept of home does not even need a structure because the feeling of being accepted and love does not require a structure. The structure which could either be the building, organization or even group of people is just a symbolic face of that emotion that we are accepted and loved that it a home. Home is such a wonderful place and it is no wonder that we coined the cliché – “home sweet home” because to be at home really feels sweet. Its concept is so appealing to us that we always seek for it everywhere we go. Read More
