Considering the above situation, this paper shall discuss why some people are happier than others. In order to answer the question, two specific psychological theories shall be used in the hope of coming up with a more comprehensive analysis of the question.
Happiness is defined as the “degree to which a person evaluates the overall quality of his present life-as-a-while positively. In other words, how much the person likes the life he/she leads” (Veenhoven, 1997, p. 4). Two theories may be used in order to explain the happiness and why some people are happier than others. These two are the set-point theory and comparison theory. According to the set-point theory of happiness, people are programmed to experience a certain level of happiness and such level of happiness is mostly reflective of how well we are doing (Veenhoven, 2006). In other words, we are happy simply because we are meant to be happy; and therefore, some people are meant to be happier than others. It just happens that way (Veenhoven, 2006). The classic application for this theory is the theory of divine predestination which basically sets forth that God has decided that some people will be happy and others will not. Based on genetics, this theory also sets forth that some people are just genetically predisposed to feel more happiness than others. Lykken (1999) discusses how one’s genetic predisposition to happiness is inherited. This theory also views “the evaluation as a stable attitude towards life and focuses more on the mental processes that maintain (sic) this attitude than on the processes that have brought it about” (Veenhoven, 2006, p. 2). In other words, the set-point theory focuses on assessing happiness based on attitude towards life and the thought processes involved. ...Download file to see next pages Read More
