My virtual life 14. Some behaviors and choices that a person could make in midlife that could be obstacles to later-life success include decisions on diet and friendship. Poor diets in midlife can lead to health illness like diabetes later in life; lack of friends in midlife can also lead to loneliness in old age 15. My tolerance of people who are different from me is different compared to the tolerance of the people in in my parent’s generation. This is Individuals of my parent’s generation didn’t have an opportunity to mingle with people from different cultures, races and background. There is no difference at all in my own family. 16. I think I would not cope well with the balancing of the needs of two generations living in my home. This is because I would find it really hard to understand some needs of the people in another generation, other than my generation; the people in other generation would think that I ignore some of their need. 17. Having a well-paying and permanent job can make me view life as worth living, and fully satisfactory. A well-paying and permanent job can as well make feel that my future life would be successful and devoid of financial constraints. The age at which an individual conducts a life review has influence on how one rates his or her overall satisfaction .This is because an individual is more likely to be successful at some points in their age than at others. 18. I think that having invested wisely in the National social security fund during my working years will play a big role into my retirement years. If I have invested well in the social security fund, I will be able to have enough fund to see me through my adulthood years. I also think that engaging in a retirement saving scheme will help me have enough cash to meet my financial needs during my retirement period. Again, I think that staying employed part-time could also play a big role in helping bust my savings. 19. Some people might experience a full-on midlife crisis due to anxiety, unmanaged stress, unresolved issues, forced divorce, loss of a partner, or lack of employment, and any sources of income. Some other people experience mild crisis due to the fact that they are capable of managing stress, are strong-willed, are go-getters, and are not afraid to risk in anything to accomplish their life goals. 20. The reasons why parents are having boomerang children are; lack of employment for the young adults, some parents feel that their young adults still require advise and control hence having them at home, the cost of living has gone very high that some young adults are unable to take of bills, while some parents feel that the world has become such an insecure place that they fear staying away from their young adults, who are perceived to be victims of these insecurities. 21. Imagine that several of your peers changed companies at the same time that you were considering a change into a new career. They cited a number of reasons for making career changes in midlife, including the following: there was little challenge at their current job; the challenges became routine; their jobs changed in ways they do not like; they lost their current jobs, so they are switching careers all together; they were asked to do more with fewer resources; technological advances rendered their jobs no longer enjoyable; they were unhappy with their status and wanted a fresh start; they feel burned out; this is the last time they can make a meaningful change towards more job satisfaction before running out of time. Which of these reasons would compel YOU to change jobs in midlife? Describe your thoughts for each answer you select. 22. I see midlife years leading me to successful aging in the near future. This is because I have utilized my time and all the opportunities that I have had in life will, and I will continue using my time well. For that reason, when I reach midlife I will have nothing to regret about. My midlife, therefore, will be an opportunity to invest more in my life, and for that reason, midlife will lead me to success in life. 23. Many parents report difficulties in maintaining or increasing intimacy with their adult children because they want to impose their own worldviews and values on their children. For many parents, children provide a perceived source of validation of their own beliefs and worldviews; for this reason, many parents don't consider their children as autonomous individuals who need space to develop their own worldviews and values 24. I feel that it is right to give younger adults my advice or opinion, even if giving the advice may cause tension. This is because, by giving them advice, I will be helping them to make the right decision, although they may not like the advice. From my experience in relating to young people, there is no appropriate or inappropriate in giving unsolicited advice. 25. I would explain a 40-something-year-old family member’s sudden change towards unpredictable behaviors and emotionality in terms of midlife crisis. I would understand the sudden change of behavior and I would try to help the family member to overcome the crisis that they are going through. Involvement in civic or religious activity can buffer one against stress effect. This is because religious or civic activities keep one engaged and busy, and this, therefore, helps to protect one from stress. Involvement in civic and religious activities also gives meaning to one’s life, thus protecting one from stress. 27. Some of the reasons that may make me continue working past the age of retirement include the following. The first reason is the need for fulfillment in life- work provides a lot of fulfillment in life. The second reason is to avoid boredom in life. And the third reason is for economic reasons, i.e. to earn money that would enable me to pay my bills. 28. I would approach these conflicts with a lot of care. I would call upon the young people, my children, that I am conflicting with, for a discussion and deliberation on how to overcome the conflicts. The differences that I would feel comfortable with are on communication and style of interaction, and lifestyle choices. The differences that would really bother me include values, religion, and ideology. 29. Some of the employment problems that an older person might face that could be the result of their age include the following. The first problem is fatigue, older people get tired quickly and this, therefore, leads to lower productivity. The second problem is forgetfulness. Older people tend to be forgetful, and this may affect their performance in employment. 30. The internal factors that might contribute to a positive outlook about aging include experience and high levels of knowledge; old people have gathered a lot of experiences in life for the many years that they have lived. Many old people, also, are quite knowledgeable. The external factors that contribute to a positive outlook about aging include material wealth and a wide circle of friends. 31. The paths of retirement that seem most probable to me are continuers, adventurers, and searchers. These are because these paths of retirement will keep me actively engaged in life. 32. Older persons are not influenced much by gender identity. I don’t think that gender issues are of concern for older adults. 33. The factors that might lead a person to select gender atypical activities and life roles are genetic and personality factors. 34. The experiences that could contribute to successful aging are my experiences in relating with old people, especially my grandparents, and my experiences in relating with people of all walks of life. I have no experiences that could have put me at risk of successful aging. 35. The benefits of connecting with others throughout life and particularly during late adulthood include learning a lot from relating to many people, and also having many friends to comfort and strengthen you in times of difficulties. My experiences in life, my childhood, my adolescence, and my emerging adulthood have made me love life, and for that reason, these experiences would make me respond to death and dying with the Kubler- Loss five stages model. 37. I expect to have a sense of ego integrity as I move into and through late adulthood. What may make me have more sense of integrity is the way I have lived my life well. 38. Siblings are such an important factor in elderly individuals having successful coping skills because one feels so close and connected with one’s siblings in a very intimate way. This means that people without siblings have are at risk for problems in coping with aging. 39. My own obituary about my virtual life. The significant others who remain after me are my siblings, my children, my nephews and my nieces. My main accomplishments in life include my academic successes and raising my family successfully.
